We shouldn't be getting the series of "No's" IMO

  • I understand with the post-Fulmer and especially post-Kiffen. I'm not ready to panic yet but there is absolutely no reason that this search should resemble those two. You have the perception of being the best job available and the program isn't in the so called phase 0 like when Dooley took over. You shouldn't be marching down your list and looking desperate. I know it probably isn't quite that simple, but it's not far from it.

    I'll say it again: If Dave Hart messes this up with being the best job available and the university willing to go deeper into the red then we really have to question Dave Hart. We shall find out.

  • I agree with your sentiment, but it's tough to make definitive judgements without knowing everything.

    What is odd/concerning to me is that the search started off with no noise (a good thing IMO), and within 24 hours Fedora wants to stay at UNC, Gundy wants to stay at Ok ST, and and Strong wants to stay at UL. Either these PR errors could have been side stepped early to prevent damaging the brand or all three seriously considered the position and something fell apart during the negotiations.

    Still, too early to really know anything for sure.

  • So who has really told us "NO"?
    Apparently from today's NFL news, it sounds like Gruden told college football NO and we were the vehicle to force it.
    Did we ever offer Gundy, not sure that we did any more than talk to him and also feel he was using the opportunity of being romanced as a power play with his AD.
    Did we even talk to Fedora, doesn't sound like he was willing to talk to any since noted today that he was concerned about his reputation if he left UNC after one year.
    So really it looks like the only offer we have made is to Strong and it is on the table.

  • Not entirely sure the hesitancy to accept/decline a job offer lies directly at Hart's feet. He's doing everything he can to land a top-flight coach, but what if the top-flight coach doesn't have the desire to fight through what the SEC presents: media scrutiny, NCAA scrutiny, apathetic fan bases, and not to mention having to play Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina every year. It takes a certain type of coach to what to go through that...what if the coaches Hart is interviewing feel like they're better off where they are? You just can't offer a $4mil payday and expect Coach X to accept on a whim...and if they don't accept the job, that's not Hart's fault.

  • The rather surprise hires by Arkansas and Auburn rippled the waters and probably upped the stakes for the remaining big open positions. There's just no need for the panic and Chicken Little mentality being displayed by fans. Some folks really need to put down Twitter for a while and go breathe.

  • All very valid points. Maybe I'm going overboard. Not many offered allegedly so point taken. However, I still maintain that if it gets to the point of walking down a list then I'm looking squarely at Hart.

    Part of identifying a good fit is knowing what the chances of getting a guy is. If and I'm saying if it gets to the point where you're scrambling you didn't do a good job. Sure you go after all stars who you don't have a good chance of snagging, but If you get to a point where this coaching search ends up being reminiscent of the last one then you've failed.

    Actually if they offered a 4 million a year pay day I think most coaches would accept on a whim. To put that in perspective saban makes over 5 I believe. Point taken though.

    I can see Belina leaving and putting Wisconsin on the board a factor but not Mahlzahn.

    It is early but I hope those two scenarios isn't why. I've always maintained that UT has a PR problem.

    I said above that I am going overboard a bit. Gruden said no too depending on who you believe. Probably do need to wait a bit but I don't want to see it go down a familiar path. That's all.

  • The University of Tennessee enjoyed 30+ years of relatively calm seas, coaching wise. I hated to see Johnny Majors shown the door in the fashion that he was after all he had meant to the University, and similarly, also hated to see Mr. Fulmer sent out in much the same fashion.

    There are no BIG-time Tennessee coaching Gods waiting in the Wings to rescue our program this time, and there are multiple reasons why this coaching search may break a few hearts and try some folks patience, but I am sure in the end we will find a Coach who wants to be in Knoxville for the right reasons, and will have the talent to lead the Big Orange Nation into the future.

    Ya' Gotta Believe!

    Not meant to be disrespectful. From an outsider's prospective you have not been super relevant in awhile and whiel the program is touted in tradition and prestige, it is not recent. The recruiting has taken a hit with Spurrier setting up shop in SC as you always recruited very well from that state and Florida continues to get tougher and tougher to recruit as more and more schools have hired/connections into the market. Your recruiting has been solid, but not spectucular and since you have not won games it is hard. PEOPLE seem to be very realistic on this board, but I recall when ND wen through their coaching search and the alumni were convinced it was the BEST JOB in college football and they found out you cannot live in the 80s as seen by their rotating coaches.

    Good perspective goalieman. Most people here realize the stiff competition that we are in in today's SEC. I think most of the posts today are just frustration over a third coaching search in 4 years that doesn't seem to be moving along as fast as we want it to.

    However, I agree with your assessment, and hope we hire a coach who can increase our relevance again.

    Oh..we went through the same thing last year at Penn State...there were a lot of people who were not happy we hired someone who did not have any ties to the program...fortunately everything worked out this year...a lot because we had a great group of kids that worked their butts off, but the challenge will be coming in the next few years.

    I think Tressel would be an interesting hire and if he has to sit five games it may be worth it in the long run as he would put together a solid staff and boy would I love to see you guys steal some of scUM's recruits.
