  • Our Better Know a Poster series continues while Wes finds information on the coaching search.

    Today's good sport is RockytopATL.

    1. Why did you go to bed at a decent hour?

    2. Can you possibly get me a new hat from The Varsity? Mine's a bit 26 years old.

I appreciate the honor and accept the nomination!

Good morning, Poli and other honored posters. Unlike Wes, I refuse to call fellow Vol fans "nerds." However, I have been known to use worse words on other boards when I get mad.

The answer to No. 1 is that I have a job, and I don't want to lose it.

What'll you have? Want a chili dog with that hat?

Seriously, I might have a busy day at work today (I shouldn't post at all, but I can't resist the temptation), so if I disappear a lot today, it's because I'm trying to be a productive member of society.

  • Thanks poli and watauga for getting this going again this week!

ATL, here are some easy, basic questions - reserve the right to follow-ups after I get more Dr. Pepper in my system.

    1. Where are you originally from and where are you living now?

    2. When did you first start following the Big Orange?

    3. What attracted you for the CheckerBoard 247 site?

    4. How do you earn the money for pay for membership to the CheckerBoard?

Easy ones for now my friend . . . peace

If Gruden is hired, we should all make a special trip over there. I haven't been there in a huge number of years but I understand Destiny, Roxy and Angel are still there. The names haven't changed; they just switch out the girls!

I know I'm breaking the rules, actually answering questions before 10:30 p.m., but I was a FAST deadline reporter, unlike some guys we know.

VV, I was born and raised in Clinton, almost in the Hill's shadow. I have been in suburban Atlanta since 1984.

I grew up listening to John Ward with my dad. My earliest and best Tennessee memory was that incredible game against UCLA in 1965. I was 9 years old. Dewey Warren, the Swamp Rat, UT's first passing quarterback, was lighting it up, slinging it to the likes of Johnny Mills and tight end Austin Denny. UT won 37-34, and in those days, that was a big time shootout.

I used to hang out at govolsxtra, but the Gata trolls and the constant negativity was really wearing me out. When they announced this site was going up, and when Wes came on board, I decided to be a charter member. It is the first time I've paid for news on the Internet, and I do not regret it. Besides, I had read Wes for some time and respected his reporting. Ryan was an unexpected bonus, and we are incredibly lucky to get the attention we do from 247's editor in chief.

As I have noted many times, I spent most of my life in journalism. But now I am a public affairs officer for a government agency, so I still deal with reporters every day.

Thanks ATL! We were almost neighbors - I am originally from Caryville and coached a lot of baseball at the fairgrounds in Clinton. +1

    Thank ya, thankin.

As I said, I'm hoping for Gruden, and I like the Morris rumor on the DC side. I suspect Gruden will be one of those head coaches who will call his own plays. So I know this wouldn't happen, but we happen to have an OC right now who lived that arrangement for a year without problems -- Chaney under Kiffin. So keep the guy on so he can be one of the few OCs to coach under three different bosses.

Movies... I am a hopeless case here, but I absolutely love "Field of Dreams." It gets so many emotions flowing. Baseball. Fatherhood. Fantasy. Cornfields. Wow!

Wes is most likely a dirty fighter and likely wins with a series of low blows and cheap shots.

I used to go to the fairgrounds with my high school buddies every Saturday and play sandlot football on those fields. Great memories!

Why are you a vol fan? Do you like all vol sports?

First and foremost, I'm a UT football fan. Partially because of that, I knew from the first day I thought about colleges that I would attend UT and I spent four of the greatest years of my life there.

At UT, I was lucky enough to be around during the Ernie and Bernie years, so I saw some great basketball. And since I went into journalism and my first pro job was in Knoxville, I got to cover UT sports, which was a blast.

I have never been a huge Lady Vols fan, but I follow them with interest. Same for baseball.

  • Thanks for letting us get to know you better, RTATL!

Did you play organized sports, growing up in E. TN? What did you play and how many years?

Did you go to Anderson County HS? I grew up on a farm on the Knox/Union County line...

Hope you have a great day, and thanks again for playin'... preciatecha

  • In my best Barbara Walters voice: If you were a twee, what kind of twee would you be?

And on a more serious note: What are your overall impressions of Dave Hart's handling of the coaching search via the code of Omerta, bunker mentality, and the like? Good or bad way to go about it and why?

  • You are most welcome, AWBO!

I played basketball and football when I was young. My last football was sixth grade or so. I was too slow for any skill positions and not quite big enough to play on the line.

I went to Clinton High (Anderson County High didn't exist then). I started my sportswriting career in high school, covering the Dragons for my hometown weekly newspaper and also stringing for the KNS and occasionally The Oak Ridger.

    Hey dober!

I would be an oak tree, because they are big and I could bounce acorns off the head of anybody below who was making me mad.

It's hard to give Hart a grade until we see who he gets, but I admire how he is going about it right now. I know it's incredibly frustrating for Wes and Co. with no leaks out there, but frankly you don't want the media detailing every step you make. It makes the missteps look worse than they might really be. Now that Memphis TV has popped something, I guess we will see if there is a rumor control operation or they will continue to hide in the bunker. For all we know, they already have a rumor control operation -- "I have nothing to tell you today. The search continues."

If I were doing it, I'd try to keep it undercover like he has. Search firms suck. How can a guy be an athletic director at a major university and not know enough about the coaching game to find and hire his guy?

I totally forgot about the athletic highlight of my career. Intramural football at UT!

I was an RA in Carrick and my sophomore year I had some track guys and some rugby guys on my floor. One track guy was a sprinter and we had a rugby guy with a great arm (go figure!). The track guy would go out and the QB would throw it as far as he could and it usually worked. So we proceeded to run the table, winning the dorm championship, finally losing to the frat champions in the university championship game. (They cheated, of course). I played middle linebacker and intercepted a pass in the dorm championship game that set us up to win.

  • Where did you live when you went to UT? Why do you have a man-crush on Paul Finebaum? Do you remember Denise Conrad Bates? What was your favorite meal at UT? Have you ever been to my watering hole, Tavern at Phipps? What year did you play intramurals? I think my team (RW-5- Reese West 5) beat you!

  • RTATL,
Thanks for taking the time to play along. Especially while at work.
    1. When you go into town do you dare drive or do you take the MARTA?
    2. Do you like baseball if so is it obvious that you are a Braves fan?
    3. Regardless of your answer to #2 what are your other favorite pro sports teams?

Thanks again RTATL and Go Vols
