Where did you live when you went to UT? Why do you have a man-crush on Paul Finebaum? Do you remember Denise Conrad Bates? What was your favorite meal at UT? Have you ever been to my watering hole, Tavern at Phipps?

    Hi cpa!

I lived in North Carrick and was an RA. Later, I lived in Morrill and finished in Andy Holt. I also did one quarter in Reese after coming back to school from an internship.

Paul and I were huge friends in college. I will publicly admit here that I talked him into coming down to the Daily Beacon, which started his illustrious career. Paul has an incredibly successful gig going and before somebody gets started, let me say this: it's show biz. He does not "hate UT."

    I don't remember Denise. Should I?

I loved steak night at Smokey's in UT Center. Great deal for us dorm plan eaters.

I have never been to the Tavern. Have you ever been to Summits Tavern out towards Snellville? Best draft beer selection in the ATL.

Denise was a cheerleader in the late 70s and early 80s. I went out with her roommate. She was stunning good looking and dated Kevin Nash. She realized Nash was an idiot and started dating a guy named Bill Bates. The rest is history. Hopefully, their son is going to follow Dad to UT.

That's cool. I live in Alabama, and listen to Paul's show every now and then. It's pure entertainment, and often makes me laugh out loud while I'm driving. Do you still keep in touch with him?

I'm taking Ryan in this fight. As Tyler Durden said, "Skinny guys fight 'til they're burger."

  • RockytopATL,

Thanks for playing the game. I always enjoy your posts. I'm sure that you're a fantastic PAO.

    1. Best pizza..... where? (I'm thinking Oak Ridge, Big Ed's)

    2. Best Vol football memory.

    3. Favorite Vol football team.

Yes. We talk on occasion, exchange emails more often. A couple of years ago, he came to town and after a great lunch (he bought), I ferried him to a studio so he could do a remote ESPN interview. He knew what they were going to ask and asked my opinion on the way there, and on one question, he used my answer.

So I had that going for me.

    A ha!

No lie, I once briefly dated a UT majorette. But honestly, she was not my type.

I guess you wouldn't really expect Wes to protect you if there's trouble on the street someplace?

  • Thank you, ODA. I like your posts too.

You know, I do have very fond memories of Big Ed's Pizza. I'm old enough to remember Ed himself and he was in there every night, surrounded by actual juvenile delinquents who he gainfully employed to make and serve those hand-tossed pies. I haven't been there in probably 10 years, but I loved that place beginning in my high school days.

Best Vol football memory is the 1998 UT-Florida game. John Ward: "The ball is down, the kick is up .... NO SIREE! NO SIREE! Final score, Tennessee 20, Florida 17. Pandemonium reigns!"

And '98 is obviously my favorite team. Everyone talks about the miracle of the Stoerner fumble, but the most impressive thing to me is how we romped down the field after it happened to win. It was pure smash mouth football and it was a lovely thing to watch. I used to tell anyone who listened that all I wanted in life was for UT to win a national championship. Naturally, as soon as it happened, I wanted another one. Everything that's happened since is probably all my fault for being greedy.

Conveniently located to Blankenship Field, I may add. Clinton and Oak Ridge were big rivals in those days and Clinton even occasionally won one.

Thanks for sharing Rockytop. I think before the end of the day, you should select the next Wed with contestant. Have fun with that.

    You are welcome.

As for next week, we gotta hope we have a coach by then and that slacker Wes can come back and do a little work for a change!
