***Wednesdays With Wes, The Thread: 9/5/12 Edition***

I can't speak for Wes, but I don't know if you're going to get much of an answer on this one. Wes doesn't really cover recruiting, and I really don't think there are many teams you can point the finger at in terms of unethical recruiting practices.

I spoke to 3 college coaches in South Carolina who told me they have seen Tee Martin basically direct practice for recruits on multiple occasions. Said his requests would range from requesting certain routes from receivers to working out WRs 1:1 in drills at a HS practice. Both admitted recruiting violations were widespread but that Tee had a bad reputation with other recruiters around the southeast.

All said was really difficult single out any team as the worst

Did you play high school baseball?

What's your best/worst/funniest memory of high school baseball, is so?

Also, choose one, PBR or Natty Bo's?

    1. Yes.

    2. Best — Never lost a single game to Webb in my three years on the varsity team, and individually I hit a game-winning double to win a tournament my junior year. Worst — Losing three one-run games to McCallie in two years, including a 2-1 game in the state tournament that ended my senior season. Funniest — It's a tie. I almost got expelled from the school and got demoted to JV fall ball for a while after flipping a bird in all four takes of the team picture when I was a sophomore. My coach tried pulling me out of a school assembly by my ear in front of everyone, and I smacked his hand away and told him that he wasn't my dad, and if he grabbed me near my head like that again I'd punch him in the face. And then once I tried to hit a home run against a really bad team when we had a really big lead, but I fouled the curveball off my own face, spun around, hit the back of my head on the ground and gave myself a concussion. I also used to say the most awful but hilarious things to batters on the rare days I played catcher, and one time an umpire told me he'd have ejected me if I hadn't made him laugh so much. I also got tossed from an AAU game for my not-so-polite, not-so-eloquent response to an umpire who incorrectly called me out at home plate. I was so effing safe, though.

    3. PBR, for sure.

EDIT: One more story. One time my buddies and I stayed up way too late and did way too many stupid things the night before our summer team played an 8 a.m. game against one of the nation's highest-ranked teams — they were from Southern California, and they had all kinds of Jose Canseco/Kenny Powers mullets — and I almost threw up on first base after diving to catch a line drive. I caught the ball but nearly lost off the previous night's party favors on that bag. I think I also swung after the ball hit the mit one time that morning. I'm not proud of it, but I'm nothing if not honest.

  • Wes... you have worked in many different venues as a sportswriter... Now you currently work here...

Each time was it an increase in pay or benefits? Or have you taken a job due to location or just a hunch maybe? Just curious if each step you have taken has been up the "economic" ladder so to speak

How many series do you expect the 1's to play this week? My current over/under is 4 before there are wholesale substitutions.

I'd play them like a normal game until the lead gets to 35 or 40 points. They need the practice, IMO.

did any of the vols players or coachs comment on the new look? If so, were they positive or negative?

Lots of people laughed. I expected that. I do look like a toddler now, after all.

Do you think "Pig" Howard will play this week against Georgia State? And do you see him in the slot, putting Hunter back outside where he belongs?

Pig won't play this week, and it might be Akron or so before he gets back. Remember that he's a true freshman who missed all of preseason camp.

At some point, though, I think you'll see guys like Croom, Howard and Blanc all playing more in the slot. But remember that Hunter still lines up wide a good bit.

Has Dooley commented on the new look yet?

Do you get carded more without the beard?

Did you notice the UT fans taking the NC State fans out of the game Friday night? From my section, it looked like the entire State contingent basically shut it down by the end of the 1st Quarter.

    1) Nope. Haven't run into him yet.

    2) Haven't tried yet. But I bet I'll get carded for anything that even has caffeine. I look like a child.

    3) For sure. There were many more UT fans there, anyway, but State's fans didn't have much to cheer about after a while. Still surprised that only 55-56k showed up, though. I know State didn't live up to its end of the bargain, but you'd think some more UT fans or even neutral college football fans in Atlanta would pick up some of those empties on the State half of the dome.

Is the new athletic facility open? If not, when will it be open?

Part of it are, but most of it isn't.

I think it's scheduled to be completed by the end of the football season, and we're supposed to get another media tour sometime after that — probably after signing day, if I had to guess, but that's just a guess.

Which SEC team has the most unethical recruiting practices? Without naming names, what is the most unethical thing that you've heard about in recruiting?

None of 'em are squeaky clean, and anyone who tells you otherwise is naive at best and a total moron at worst. The worst reputation award would have to go to Auburn, at least since I started covering the SEC in 2000. Auburn in the SEC and Clemson in the SEC have the worst reputations, but even the "clean" programs are pretty filthy once you start digging around. There are some really, really good people in this business, and there are some really, really, really bad people, too.

I don't want to get too specific, but some of the stuff you hear makes you sick. Large payments in recruiting and negative recruiting lies pale in comparison to some of the stuff that happens when guys actually enroll in school — covered up sexual assaults, coaches/boosters paying players for abortions, etc. And some of the rumors are worse than that. I've been around long enough and know enough people to have heard some really, really nasty stuff along the way.

How many non-UT SEC football games do you watch in a given year?

As many as I can. I've got to know that stuff for my job, and obviously SEC football is fun to watch — most of the time.

Within the W/R/K group, who's available to have a hand shook thisFriday or Saturday?

I saw an interesting idea at a Kansas blog (reading on Brandon Bourbon) where they ranked the top 10 players from the last game. Where the top player got 10 pts and the 10th got a point. Presumably score is kept throughout the season.

Can you give us your top 10 performers, in order of best to 10th best? I have mine written down. Want to see how close I am to yours. Is this a concept we could adopt here?

This is a really good idea, but I see three potentially fatal flaws:

    1) Maybe 3 percent of us can actually give some kind of legitimate grade for O-linemen.

    2) It's hard to know who messed up an assignment on any given play. We don't know the calls.

    3) How do you compare a guard to a quarterback to an outside linebacker?

I'm not saying no. Just saying ... I see some problems there.

  • Probably asked before, but who has been the player/coach that you most enjoyed covering? Any one left you so impressed that you knew they would do well beyond athletics?
