Wes - BB recruiting question???

  • Funny I was looking up some recruiting info on point guards....seeing how we don't have one on the court now...and from some reviews...our longtime PG commit from AL - Laundry is struggling. If Cunzo is looking around for PG's how come the two top 150 guards down in Whites Creek don't have offers...? Yet have from other SEC schools? They are 2014 guys and we are loosing time and ground. Just wondering what's going on.

By the way... 2011 two PG recruits....wes washpun, yeah no longer around and chris jones.... oak ridge acad. NC then NW FL St. Comm. Coll. has singed with Louisville. So effectively we've squandered 2-3 years of not signing any playable PG talent.... while others like every good program (Louisville, UNC) make it a priority to sign multiple guard and PG players EVERY SINGLE year.

Why in the last decade or two has UT and any staff never gotten that memo ?

I think that some of this is Bruce's fault. We didnt have a PG on the roster when he left. UT would have had problems regardless of if Bruce had stayed because he had not done a good job with PGs throughout his tenure. CJ was the only real PG we had and Bruce inherited him. Bruce was awesome and I miss the tournament but he had weaknesses and finding and developing PGs was one of them.

  • Agree with your point some what...however, the blame of Pearl is pretty short sided and weak for the most part...at least how you stated it...maybe you meant to say more about development time or scheme.

Bobby Maze and Melvin Goins were not as bad as we have now....and both of them were Pearl recruits. So he found them ?
Problem with both of them was they were JUCO guys and not here LONG enough...so maybe that harkens to your development slant on Pearl... However, Maze really started to shine late in his last season and in that tourny run..... again Time I think was a factor..... that was compounded by Pearls offensive style of play....which at times could be more Calapari esk.. rather than Roy WIlliams esk.... where a huge impact is placed on the PG to make a system work. Now that may be on the player some to recognize things and execute what Pearl laid out.. or it might be Pearl and Staff's issue with developing. But I think if you look what his staff has done at other places....you will see players being developed and winning teams resultant..... AKA Forbes at North Florida JUCO..... where by chance he has Chris Jones who was out of memphis and committed to UT....before not making his grades and going the academy route then JUCO. oh and by by BY the way... .Jones is now signed on with Louisville.... a place where a coach knows a thing or two about recruiting point guards and winning tournament games!

so not to sound combative... just to make a point. Its on CM not Pearl.

  • Being picky about a point guard is why we are in this mess. If we had one that could dribble and not turn the ball over it would be a homerun signing

  • Was Ramar Smith CBP's first PG recruit? Did his personal struggles lead to the recruitment of juco PGs? Is character or defensive prowess more important to CCM in the recruitment of a PG? Why didn't he go after Chris Jones harder when he got the job or had that ship already sailed?

Sorry for the post full of questions, but I know many of you know the answers.

Bruce Pearl got to the elite 8 and 3 or 4 sweet sixteens without CJ Watson. Ramar Smith, Bobby Maze, and Melvin Goins weren't elite point guards by any means. Don't blame this on Bruce Pearl, thats laughable.
