Wes' Tweet from tonight, next year's lineup

  • Now, I don't want to get ahead of myself, there is still some basketball to be played this year, but Wes reiterated the already discussed point of next years potential lineup for CCM and the BasketVols.

Per Wes, we could potentially start: Golden, Hubbs, McRae, Maymon, & Stokes. Our bench could potentially be: Richardson, Moore, Yemi, Reese, Chievous, and Edwards.

I guess the point of this topic is to discuss the likelihood of this being UT's best lineup, ever. I don't think there has been a specific thread for this already, and if there has I apologize.

My personal thoughts are that if Hubbs turns out to be the player he is supposed to be and McRae keeps up this monster play he found again tonight, this will be the best UT Men's Basketball team I've seen in my lifetime. And yes, that includes 07', 08', and 10'. This wont be a BruceBall team that wins games the way fans want them won, but by God I think that lineup will win them quite a few games in good-ole-fashioned SEC football style. What do y'all think?

  • I really can't see Richardson coming off the bench. He's a defensive force at times and I can see his offensive game drastically improving by his junior year. Richardson was a starter as a freshman... No way he comes off the bench as a junior.

    Fair point.

Obviously Hubbs wont be given a starting spot the second he walks into TBA. I do think that it's Richardson's spot that Hubbs will be gunning for. Can't see Golden or McRae losing their spots to a freshman. No matter who you give the starting job to, that's still one helluva linup.

  • If Hubbs and Moore are coming off the bench, then our lineup is stacked. It could be one of our best ever.

    Agent Orange

  • Next year it will all be on Coach Martin, because you are correct this could be the best starting 5 ever.

Greatest ever? Sorry, but that isn't close to the Ernie and Bernie Show.

  • I certainly wouldn't call it the best ever. Possibly not even the best of the past 5 or 6 years, but they can be very good. The potential will definitely be there to contend in the SEC and make a deep run in March.

Add Reggie Johnson, Mike Jackson, Crosby, Darden and Bertelcamp to that line-up. "Money".

  • Still need a PG. Can't play Vandy every night. Teams that will pressure full court will frustrate Golden and wear him down...

You're also relying a lot on Hubbs who has never played a college game. Not all 5 stars pan out, and it's not like he is one of the elite ones. Stokes has been a freaking beast of late to, totally different player. If he continues this stretch he may go pro.

Long way to go, but don't forget about all the problems that go you to 10 losses, many can be pointed to not having a PG to run your offense, and that guy isn't on your roster next year.

Win the NCAA tourney and then we'll call them the greatest ever. But this will be close to impossible without better point guard play.

  • So does it seem like Stokes is staying another year or leaving early? He's been on fire recently and you have to think NBA scouts have noticed.

Personally, I think he needs to show more consistency before that happens. But he has a good bit of season left to do that, so who knows.

Maymon will be the biggest difference maker and cover up the PG problems. He was our best ball handler last year and he was the one responsible for breaking the press. He also prevents teams from doubling Stokes.

  • A front court of, Stokes, Maymon and Yemi, is scary. Who is going to want to battle with those three all night... let alone be the scout team playing them every day.

    spacesvols

  • I think Hubbs' chance to start will come down to his defense. We all know that CCM values defense as his highest priority, so until Hubbs shows he can be a lock down guy I have to think Richardson will be starter with Hubbs being a 6th man candidate.

not unless Hubbs can shoot and score like chris lofton and defend like JuJuan Smith..... sure there's a lot of potential there. But we are a long way off from seeing how chemistry makes up next years team and works like it did back in the Midddle of the decaded.... this years squad has been very very very puzzling.

  • Best lineup during the Cuonzo era? Sure, but it wouldn't even be the best in the past few years. That lineup with Lofton, JaJuan, Tyler Smith, Chism, and Ramar Smith was pretty dang good with JP, Brian Williams, and Duke Crews coming off the bench.

    I miss bruce cry

I hope next year's team can get their offense going so we can compete at the same level those guys you mentioned above did.
