Wes, do those inside the AD understand....

  • Exactly what will happen here if Gruden comes back to coaching at another school? If he doesn't come back and stays in the booth that is one thing, but if our mismanaged dog and pony show of an athletic department doesn't go make the absolute best effort possible to get him and he ends up at Arkansas this fan base will revolt. It doesn't matter who they hire in that scenario, fans will be so fed up that if he doesn't start contending immediately they will abandon ship.

Fans are pissed off. We are one of the top schools in the country in revenues and there is no excuse for penny pinching in the single most important hire the entire university can make. We have too many passionate fans and big money contributors to pretend to be paupers. If they really do go the bargain route like the info from Hart and now Cheek seems to suggest it is going to get extremely messy here.

So basically, are they aware of what the fans expect and just how negatively it would impact the bottom line if Arkansas were to swoop in and outbid us? Do they comprehend the magnitude of just how fed up with the AD's BS the average fan is? I hope they do.

Edit: And yes, I understand they are going to go through the pretense of making him an offer. But there's a difference between what you're hearing out of our athletic department/admin and what you're hearing out of Arkansas. They are serious about going big, and I think we're just pretending to be.

I trust Dave Hart with this decision much more than Mike Hamilton. That's my two cents.

  • It doesn't matter who the AD is if we're not willing to pay the piper and Arkansas is, and they very much are. Our AD made it a point to mention our financial problems and Cheek just said they don't know where the buyout money is coming from. It sounds to me like they are preparing us for a cheaper alternative.

I think it really would depend on who gets hired. I think if stoops or fisher got hired, fans would be good with the decision.

Gruden is a long shot for us and an even longer long shot for Arkansas. His wife and her family would likely revolt if he took a job in Arkansas over their hometown school. Just my opinion, but him going to Arkansas would be a slap in the face to a whole lot of the Gruden's friends and his wife's family. I'm pretty sure he's smarter than that.

I'm as passionate as the next Vols fan, but this is an overreaction in every sense of the word. I wouldn't make those kinds of statements. Your opinion doesn't represent all Vols fans.

You're only setting yourself for up for disappointment if you're pinning your hopes and dreams on ONE coach, and a longshot at that. There are plenty capable, competent coaches out there not named Jon Gruden. Relax, my friend, let the search process play itself out.

  • They dont have their heads buried in the sand, they know damn well who the fan base wants. They know they at least have to make a BIG show of doing everything to get him. Gruden has had opportunities to go anywhere he wants......i cant see his dream job being at Arkansas of all places. They can say they have all this money and whatever, but they dont have the same fan base, facilities and resources that UT can provide.......not to mention he has ties here.

Like I said, not getting Gruden is fine. If he stays in the booth I will embrace the next coach and hopefully he will be successful. But if our AD is too cheap despite being top five in revenues nationally while Arkansas is not....it's time to tell them we won't stand for this crap anymore. They always shop in the clearance aisle and we always just accept it, and that's why we're in this situation in the first place. We are in a position to possibly make an unprecedented hire in the history of college football. There has never been a sub-50 super bowl winner take over a major CFB team. If they pinch pennies here it is time we stop giving them our money, period.

They need to understand that fact.

What are you talking about? At the time we hired Lane Kiffin he had the highest paid staff in college football. Monte Kiffin had a $1 million salary.

  • His staff maybe, but he himself wasn't that highly paid.

"Tennessee's new coaching staff will earn $5.325 million this season, including $3.325 million in salary for its nine assistant coaches, UT announced Thursday."

    http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2009/jan/22/33m-salary-for-assistants-may-top-nation/

That's less than Saban makes by himself. That's less than the guy at Louisville is saying he is willing to pay to keep Charlie Strong. Carolina is paying Spurrier's staff over 6.5 right now.

Think about what you just posted. Lane Kiffin CHOSE to accept a lower salary so that he could pay a staff of highly compensated super recruiters which just so happened to includea super ball winning defensive coordinator and 3 former Rivals recruiters of the year in Frank Wilson, Eddie Gran, and Ed Orgeron.

You're ranting about how we're penny pinching. News flash; we haven't even hired a coach yet. Chill out.
