Wes...about Jimbo Fisher

  • I saw you on twitter talking about how you can't believe that some fans wouldn't want a coach of a current BCS team that resides in Fla.

    While I won't say I don't want Jimbo, I think there's enough out there to question whether or not Jimbo would be worth big $$ to get him to come here. Here's my take on Jimbo. We don't know if he can really coach. I feel the same way about him that I did after Dooley after year 1. What I mean by that is nobody could have come in to UT and succeeded big time with that first team. It was broken. We were going to find out if he can coach down the road.

    With regard to Jimbo, don't you think there are 50 or so coaches that could have stepped into that position at Fla St and had great success? They have every built in advantage. They're in talent rich Fla. They play an easy schedule in a terrible conference. Maybe he is a great coach. Maybe not. I do know that IF he came to UT, he's saying goodbye to all those built in advantages and we'll see if he can do a job that not 50+ guys can do, but maybe a handful.

  • Consider this, though:

    To find 3 years that were as successful as the last 3 at FSU you have to go back to 2002-2004. He has raised their level of play since he took over relative to the 5 years before.

    Yes, they play in a conference that is easier than the SEC (so does every other coach we're looking at), but look at their losses:

    2010:
    #10 Oklahoma
    UNC
    NC St.
    #12 Va Tech.

    2011:
    #1 Oklahoma
    #21 Clemson
    Wake
    UVA

    2012:
    NC St.
    #6 UF

    There are some losses in there to average teams, but you can't cross a guy off the chart because his teams have lost here and there to a team they shouldn't have. That's in every coaches history. He's certainly had more good wins than bad losses.

    I guess, in summary, yes, there are some reasons to wonder if he's ready for this league, but he's done more than any of the other real candidates to prove that he is. In fact, he's arguably done more than Gruden to prove he's ready to compete at UT. We have more tangible evidence that he's a good college coach.

    He's my favorite for the job going forward.

    This is the main point, IMO. For UT to be successful, you have to recruit. I don't know if Jimbo gives us, as Charlie Weis would say, a schematic advantage.

    Again, I'm not saying don't hire Fisher. I really don't know either way. It's just my opinion that he has a ceiling of 9 wins or so. Yes, that's much better than where we are now. But is it where we want to be? I guess everyone is colored by what Saban is doing at Bama. We all want the next Saban. Is that realistic? Probably not.

  • Well, I think if there was an obvious "next saban" we'd be all over him like we were all over Gruden.

    I guess I don't know what some people want here. Fisher took over for an iconic coach and has recruited at an elite level in his tenure there, in the general region in which we compete for players. He's done it. Short of hiring Fulmer, there is no other way to judge a candidate's ability to recruit at UT other than seeing him do it at another program, and Jimbo Fisher has done it.

    Yeah, I get that UT is unique because you have to cast a wider net. But if you're saying a guy who has recruited really well at another high-profile program can't come here and get it done, then I guess what you're saying is no one can. That, or I don't understand the criteria.

    I'd like to see the evidence we were "all over Gruden".

    That doesn't seem to be the way anyone covering this process would categorize it.
