What About Neyland

  • Nashville has one. El Paso has one. Why not Knoxville? Knoxville is central to the east coast, and with the passion for football in east Tn. I bet Neyland would be full. Im calling for a bowl game in Knoxville. People travel from all around the country to go to Gatlinburg, and I bet they would come for a bowl game too. Lets call it the "Smokey Mountain Classic"

  • Call me crazy, but I've always thought they should have a Super Bowl in Neyland. Great atmosphere and a 103,000 seat capacity would appeal to me if I were an NFL coach. But keep the power T at midfield and the end zone art. Just imagine Peyton pulling a bootleg and running through the checkerboard again...

  • I have always heard the hotel situation and places to stay close to downtown is what hurts Knoxville.

Yup. The quality of game Neyland would attract isn't supported by the infrastructure and hotel situation in Knoxville...

Iti is true that Knoxville lacks the hotel infrastructure to support a bowl. And McGhee-Tyson isn't exactly an easy place to get to from most cities.

There was a time that no one would even consider starting bowl games in cities without domes where it gets pretty cold in December. You have to be a rabid fan (or a Cheesehead) to voluntarily sit for four hours in a stadium when it's 25 or 30 degrees outside. ESPN's money has changed that a bit, but when they pan the camera in Nashville, El Paso and Yankee Stadium, you're still seeing thousands of empty seats.

Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are right up the street. Spend the night in the mountains, and then go warch the game

Would be a good idea? I think we could handle the folks between hotels and cabins easily. We would definitely attract people from, NC, SC, GA, AL, KY, OH, FL, AR, LA, and TX. Oh and Missouri too. Looks like a no brainer! Unless the cost of using Neyland is too steep for the sponsors?

  • I would think it's more of the airport situation than the Hotel situation in Knoxville. There seems to be plenty of hotel rooms around Knoxville as compared to Birmingham. The difference is Birmingham has an International Airport that is much larger than McGhee Tyson.

When I drive up for games the price of a hotel room stays fairly inexpensive in Knoxville. Try finding hotel space in Auburn or Tuscaloosa it's almost $300 a room on a game weekend with a 2 night minimum.

Definitely an issue. MT has the ability to take more flights, they don't have ground staff to cover the business tho. Maybe doing a roundtable discussion with Knox co. leaders, Airport and airline officials etc...could make adjustments to handle the influx of travelers during a bowl week. Borrow TSA, gate agents, and ground staff from larger airports for that week....Just a thought. Hey! We can all wish can't we?

Can't argue that point, but there is a need for better bowls, and a more attractive locations for teams, fans and families. Maybe with the BCS demise coming, some of the lower bowl games will be eliminated in favor of better games at better facilities. Maybe, maybe not. Fun to dream lol

  • I am not sure but believe most of the bowls are at off campus stadiums. I have done no research so that may not be accurate. They may be the official stadium of a particular university but still off campus or shared (like Tampa Bay and the University of South Florida). This allows for alcoholic beverages to be sold. I am certainly glad that none are sold in Neyland. It is difficult dealing with many that come in that are already buzzed or drunk. uhoh
