What Can Butch do to Get Vonn Bell?

  • Attached is an article from the AJC. Vonn is going to definitely visit the 25th which is great news. What can Butch do to sell him back to UT. Terry Fair can only help. Vonn played some CB in the UA game. I think you have to pitch Eric Berry to death on Vonn Bell and let him know his 1st year he will be a hybrid player, like Berry was his junior year. A lot of times lining up at nickel...

It's obviously not good in the article he called Butch Jones Butch Davis, but we have to pull out all of the stops that weekend. I wish NSD was that next Wednesday instead of 2 weeks. It's an up hill fight, but we can pitch immediate PT and being the hometown school always helps.

we can sign them..lets see...early playing time and being childhood dream may make bell think
hard about it..not sure he would get burried on bama roster or not..but we have more room for him to come in and play as a freshman..unlike bama..

  • I think the Vols strikeout on all three and it even seems ridiculous to say, but there may not have been three more important recruits for Tennessee in a long time than Lawson, Bell, and Green/Kamara are for this years team.

Tennessee is just so weak in those areas with underclassmen. Getting any of them (or the OMG .002% chance they get all three) would be an enormous boost to the program.

  • Y'all don't get it. We screwed this up almost a year ago (see link below) and have been behind the 8-ball ever since. I think Jones' only shot is to present a clear plan to Bell about when he'll play and how he will be used so that Bell clearly understands his role at Tennessee and his path to the NFL in 3 years. But let's face it, with the turmoil and turnover this program has had over the past 4 years what 5-star would come here on a promise of "trust me"? That's why winning and stability are so important to this program pulling itself up. If Saban tells you that he will make you an All-American and you will play for national championship, you got to believe it because he has done it. That is hard to overcome and it's not a bad reflection on CBJ and staff, it's just the situation he finds himself in now.

I have linked the article below previously, but note it is from last February. Look at how Alabama treated him and how Dooley completely screwed this up. As a Tennessee fan, if this doesn't make you angry and frustrated then I don't know what would. By the way, the day after this article appeared Bell received an offer by phone from an assistant coach. You just can't do this to a player of Bell's caliber with a A-list set of offers. We just look clueless here. It's so damn frustrating.

With what will likely be a hectic year of recruiting still ahead of him, Vonn Bells rising stock reached an early zenith with one impressive phone call Wednesday.

You're 100% right that Dooley completely botched this one, but I don't think we're out of it yet.

His OV on the 25th will be HUGE. If I had to put money on it, I still think he goes to Bama which is going to be really frustrating, but I'm not ruling us out yet just because of the OV. You know UT is going to roll out the red carpet for him, and since he grew up a Vols fan, hopefully the nostalgia and "fan" side of him starts to take over. This being his last visit is also huge from that perspective. If Butch can make a strong impression on him and get him excited about the future, that emotional high could carry in to NSD. That's really our only shot. Well, and the fact that he can play immediately versus waiting until 2015 at Bama.

Not getting my hopes up but not completely giving up yet.

No, if we won games this past year then we get Bell. It was that simple but yet people cannot accept it. Everyone that covers recruiting said that bell was waiting to see how UT was going to do. I know you people are just trying to find an excuse to blame Dooley if CBJ doesn't pull bell but the fact is that wins and losses were the biggest determinant up to this point.

I will always believe that Dooley and his staff mishandled Vonn Bell. I agree that wins and losses seem to be a factor with Bell but there are things Dooley could have done - such as return phone calls from Bell's coaches and offer Bell before Nick Saban personally called and offered him - that would have made a difference here. Let's face it, if Dooley had stayed I doubt we even get an OV. With a lot of kids that first offer is huge and Alabama made it, not his favorite school. That is a huge screwup in my opinion, especially when Dooley specifically mentioned his playing area as one of emphasis for Tennessee. DAMN! Now I'm mad all over again! I have to stay out of this thread.

If we don't get Bell then you can't blame CBJ. He is doing all he can but he is fighting an uphill battle against one of the best recruiting staffs in the country. It's just a tough situation for them.
