What Can Butch do to Get Vonn Bell?

  • It seems to me like if we can get kids on campus to take visits then Coach Jones will do the rest. Every player that has visited UT since CBJ took over has been blown away. The fact that Bell is visiting is huge. And, I believe, we are getting his last visit which is also huge. As many have previously stated, if he is uncommitted during his UT visit, look out.

Another thing I was thinking is he may be waiting and looking at what other big dawgs we sign before he makes a decision. If say we get Lawson, Green or Lawson, Kamara and North, etc. that might help him with his decision to come to UT for the simple fact that we may be close to getting good and he wouldn't be worried as much.

Very good point. Great Players want to play with other great players.

No, if we won games this past year then we get Bell. It was that simple but yet people cannot accept it. Everyone that covers recruiting said that bell was waiting to see how UT was going to do. I know you people are just trying to find an excuse to blame Dooley if CBJ doesn't pull bell but the fact is that wins and losses were the biggest determinant up to this point.

Was Dooley not the person responsible for wins and losses?

I completely agree and like I said in my last point that might prove to him that we are "on the rise".

Of course. That's why he got fired so I fail to see your point... Losing games is what put us behind with Vonn Bell, nothing else matters. People just have to continue to pile on Dooley to make themselves feel better about being behind with a kid that grew up a UT fan. "Nothing is ever as good as it seems and nothing is ever as bad as it seems" is something that the people who continue to try and blame Dooley for every single problem we have need to realize. At some point you gotta stop blaming someone and just move on. The fact is, if we won games this last year then Bell is ours no matter what. We didn't so what good does it do to try and blame Dooley for a bunch of other things that wouldn't have determined where the kid ended up?

  • I didn't think we had a shot at Bell at all until today when it was reported CBJ flipped Jenkins. I'm now about 25% we get him. Mmm.....sign with a big question mark, or a national champion. I think CBJ will do well, but until we have an at least marginally succesful season, I don't see us getting the Bell's and the Greens. Could be wrong.......hope so. I think he is visiting us last because he would like to commit to TN.........but I think there will just be to many questions that can't be answered until next fall for him to commit.

Wins and loses would be Dooleys fault so it not that people are trying to blame him that is exactly where the blame should go DUH! I think we still have a good chance of landing him anyway

A lot of people are saying that Dooley botched our chances at this specific recruit. And it kind of sounds like he didn't do a good job, but I agree that a good season would've brought Bell to UT. I agree with Popcorn that a lot of folks are blaming Dooley for everything regardless if it even makes sense. I just read a post earlier that accused Dooley of not embracing Tennessee, which is ridiculous considering he embraced it whole heartedly and even wore Orange pants. I blame Dooley for wins and losses, but overall we have more potential now than when Dooley first got here. He did more good than bad, but simply could not coach.

I totally agree with that! He was just not a good hire he couldn't win at La Tech he had a losing record there And I don't blame him for taking the UT job is was a great move for him and I think he gave it his all but he was in way over his head. But he did screw up with bell though I think he can still be had if he is treated right on his visit

I think I see the point you are trying to make that people need to quit blaming Dooley for everything but in this case, he is exactly who the blame belongs to. It doesn't matter if your in the "The staff botched the recruitment" or the "Tennessee didn't win enough games" camp, both were Dooleys responsibility.

  • With Alabama's dominance last night I believe Bell will want to be a part of such a program. I can't see him coming to a rebuilding program and I don't see him going to OSU either. Hope I'm wrong about not coming to UT

I'm not saying don't blame Dooley, I'm saying don't make up additional reasons to blame him because you think they sound better than the real reason. If we won games then Bell is a vol. Since that is the case, I see no reason to try and make up other reasons about Dooley not recruiting the kid based on something Stephen Hargis wrote... The only reason people do that is to make themselves feel better.

Only way IMO Bell comes here is if we get 3 or 4 other highly rated players. He isn't going to come here and be the only highly rated player.

I agree. Every Lawson, North, or Green that we get helps our chances with Bell.

Y'all don't get it. We screwed this up almost a year ago (see link below) and have been behind the 8-ball ever since. I think Jones' only shot is to present a clear plan to Bell about when he'll play and how he will be used so that Bell clearly understands his role at Tennessee and his path to the NFL in 3 years. But let's face it, with the turmoil and turnover this program has had over the past 4 years what 5-star would come here on a promise of "trust me"? That's why winning and stability are so important to this program pulling itself up. If Saban tells you that he will make you an All-American and you will play for national championship, you got to believe it because he has done it. That is hard to overcome and it's not a bad reflection on CBJ and staff, it's just the situation he finds himself in now.

I have linked the article below previously, but note it is from last February. Look at how Alabama treated him and how Dooley completely screwed this up. As a Tennessee fan, if this doesn't make you angry and frustrated then I don't know what would. By the way, the day after this article appeared Bell received an offer by phone from an assistant coach. You just can't do this to a player of Bell's caliber with a A-list set of offers. We just look clueless here. It's so damn frustrating.

Dooley's high hatting personality may cost us getting the services of Mr.Bell if Coach Jones can't bring Vonn back to like our system and believe he will fit in and be coached up to make it onto the NFL.
