What is your standard for success this year?

  • Question for the board:

I don't want a discussion about numbers of wins, I know we all have different expections in that regard. But in a more general sense, what will it take for you to say that the team has succeeded this year?

I would like to see a come from behind win in the second half. I think that will show a level of maturity and leadership that we haven't had the last two years.

  • Compete with the top teams in the league for all four quarters. Re-Establish UT as a premier team in the league.
A winning field goal kick as time expires would be great to see! Tired of the blunders of recent years.

  • I don't think you can talk about standard of success this year without talking about wins. I think we need Dooley to do well this year for the good of the program. If we have to start over with a new coach next year then it's going to set us back even more. I think 8 wins is the most important benchmark for the team. Besides that, I want to see a lot better push from the O-line when run blocking and a decent pass rush. That will go a long way towards getting us some wins.

  • A signature win over a team better than cincy. Competitive football for all four quarters against EVERY team on our schedule. Not needing OT to beat Vandy...

Agree about the winning field goal! We've seen some of those recently, but always for the other team...

  • Win the games we're supposed to win and also win one or two we're not supposed to win.

I just hope it doesn't come against Georgia State!

No. That wouldn't be a good sign.

  • It's not about wins so much. A losing season is unacceptable of course, but I'm just wanting to see us play each team for four quarters. Although I do understand that if we only win 7 games that Dooley may be gone, but whether if I'm a fan or the AD I'm looking at the competitiveness of the team.

  • Got to win the games we are expected to win plus NC State, Florida, and Mississippi State. Got to be competitive in the rest. If we do that I'd consider it a step in the right direction and therefore a successful season.

  • Here are my personal benchmarks for this season.

    1. Beat NC State by 2+ scores.
    2. Beat Florida.
    3. Beat one of UGA/USCe/UA.

I don't include our non-conference games or the conference games we should win. The three items above will demonstrate to me that this team is where it needs to be on the road back to winning championships.

  • Only a few checkmarks for a 'successful' season:

    1. Win in the Georgia Dome against NC State (haven't done that since '98. end that streak.)
    2. Beat Florida (no reason we shouldn't. end that streak.)
    3. Win a key road game. (either Miss St. or South Carolina. Dooley has zero quality road wins as of now.)
    4. Be competitive for 4 quarters with one team we absolutely should be beat by. (Alabama or Georgia)

And of course....BEAT KENTUCKY! (END THAT STREAK)

  • I would love to be a fly on the wall inside Dave Hart's office when he and the big donors are talking about this topic. To me the answer would be the same as most on here have stated, but if I were that fly I could you a more precise answer. However I do know one thing for certain, I can't wait for this season to start.

I'm not so sure we'll be the favorites over MSU. They'll have a really good team if their OL stays healthy.

  • All great answers.

There are two more things that I'll be looking for:

    1) Are we getting better as the season goes on?
    2) Are we able to handle adversity without falling apart?

  • Win sufficiently enough so that the fan base wants Dooley back for another season.

BTW, why do I have this sneaky feeling that Dooley is not quite the recruiter Lane Kiffin is?

You're right. Dooley recruits kids that actually stay in school. I think there are 7 guys left from Kiffin's class and none left early from UT to go to the draft.

Is it just me, do you kinda despise ... no, wrong word, what I mean is admire .. Lane Kiffin for recruiting All-Big Ten Silas Redd from Penn State, the exact fit to make a run for the national championship this year (while Dooley didn't try hard enough for Redd) ?

First question, how do you know Dooley did not try? What past connection to Redd would have given us a shot at him?

Not really -- all Big 10 is is good, but not as big of a deal as all SEC. Also - while USC may run the table in the PAC 10 and make it to the national title game (also may not), they will likely get pounded by Alabama or LSU or whomever they face there; Sort of like Texas did a few years ago.
