What the hell is going on with the defense?

  • I read that Conklin is going to call the defense this week - unless he won't. I also read that Sal pretty much quit on Sunday after he was given the news - but he didn't. Then I read about mass confusion on the sidelines last Saturday with defensive players imploring Sal to tell them what to do.

What the hell is going on? Who ran practice this week - Sal or Conklin? Wes? Ryan?

Maybe I'm reading too much into it but it seems like another year of internal coaching turmoil. I wonder if we have another meltdown ahead?

If only Sal had quit...we would most likely not owe him a buy out. If, and that's a big if, the defense does much better this week who get's the credit...Dooley because he got more involved and it makes him look 'capable' or Conklin because he 'fixed' Sal's mess. The operative word here appears to be 'MESS' and I think we may play better but not significantly. I really don't think we can go much lower so it's not a high standard to 'improve'. Also, is there video evidence of the players imploring Sal?

I'd like some details on the sideline confusion

Dooley runs his operation like the Kremlin when it comes to information, so I doubt that anyone will talk about it until long after the fact.

  • I keep hearing about this stuff that the OP mentioned, but no one seems to want to take credit for it. So it's just rumors from what I can tell. If any of them are true it says a lot about Sal's situation. I just hope the D plays better.

  • I am really hoping this works but, on the surface, this looks like doomed desperation. One of the oldest, most proven management principles is unity of command. Maybe Sal has been demoted and we aren't being told. If the defense really has two bosses, they have no boss.

Which is why I'd be surprised if he quit for more than the time it took to realize that point. +1 to you.

This says much more about Dooley than Sal. This is very reminiscent of the Chuck Smith and Da'Rick Rogers situations. This is a clear problem that seems from reports to have been on going all year. These problems should have been dealt with quickly and decisively the moment they emerged. Instead he takes a series of half measures and the problems get worse. Chuck Smith was in over his head and clashed with Wilcox and nothing was done all year. Rogers was a cancer that blew up our season last year and had too many runs ins with coaches to count and he gets suspended a few times in the off-season. The only reason Rogers got kicked off team was because the decision was made by the University and not Dooley. This whole Sal is still the D coordinator but Conklin is going to be calling at least some of the plays and helping out with the defense is a joke. Demote Sunseri or don't. This is just leads to more confusion at time when our team needs less.

  • Staff is a dumpster fire. 3 More weeks the suffering will hopefully end and we will get a proffesional who can manage his coaching staff.

Thats good to know. I had heard about tweets and and everything, but never heard where it originally came from. It sounds like Dooley may be making some big changes.

It does say a lot about Dooley. I think it says that he gives too many chances to people and doesn't like to ruffle feathers. If he can't do that then he really isn't head coach material. Hopefully he lays the law down and gets things in order.

  • This comes back to my frustration with Dooley. Relationships and decision making.

    1) It's a good idea to change the staff around and the defensive system, again, in one week? That's a good idea and that's the plan for making our defense more organized? These boys are so confused about what they're doing as it is, now we're adjusting the style again and changing the coaches around?

    2) You just lost almost every single staff person last year and, again, your coordinator is ticked off and ready to quit and you're, basically, throwing him under the bus in pressers?

He's a good man. He's good at managing facilities, etc. but as a head coach, again, I'm not a believer.

I wouldn't doubt it. My understanding is that Rogers was going to get a one or two game suspension and then he went completely off on Dooley and everybody else in his vicinity.
