Where will Petrino end up after WKU?

  • Let's face it -- we all know Petrino took the WKU job to get back in the business and use it as a stepping stone for his next opportunity.

    Where will that opportunity be?

Granted, he may not be a candidate for any major jobs next year, but where might he be a good fit when openings come up down the road? Some possibilities:

    South Carolina
The Ol' Ball Coach doesn't have many years left. When Spurrier retires, I could see the Gamecocks making a play for Petrino. Their last two hires have been big-name coaching veterans. Petrino's Southern recruiting base and excellent record could make him Spurrier's successor.

    Missouri
When Mizzou's 2012 season ended, rumors ran rampant that Pinkel was stepping down as the Tigers' head coach. Those reports were false; however, they point to possible instability in Columbia. Would Petrino be an appealing replacement for Pinkel at some point? He knows the Ozarks well. I can't help but think they'd give him a call.

    USC
This one may seem a bit far-fetched given Petrino's history as a coach in the Southeast; however, might USC be a landing spot for him if the Kiffin regime continues to go south? It wouldn't be the craziest idea in the world. After all, the Trojans hired Kiffin.

What are some other places you could see Petrino landing in the next couple years?

  • Possible destinations for Petrino post-WKU:

    1. Prison for tax evasion
    2. TMZ
    3. Marriage Counseling

In all seriousness, I think he has a LOT of work to do to rebuild his reputation before he can even sniff an SEC/PAC12 job...

The thing with USC is that like us, all of their top choice said no, and Kiffin said yes. And Kiffin was the only goofball who couldn't see that heavy sanctions were coming down on USC.

WKU just made a lot of ADs across the country happy. They did what some of the bigger job openings probably wanted to do, but knew they couldn't. IF, and it's a big if, Petrino keeps his nose clean for just two seasons a larger program will sn
    snatch him up.

Honestly, I wouldn't even call WKU a stepping stone job, this is purely a redemption job for Petrino.

  • My question would be: how many years does Petrino have to stay at WKU? I feel he wants to 'change his reputation' about being a flight risk, so, if he leaves after a year has anything changed? Can one clean up a tarnished image in such a short amount of time? I figure he'd have to be there for at least three seasons before he considers a move. Thoughts?
