Where's the money coming from?

  • Can someone please explain where the loads of money to buy out Dooley and get Gruden is coming from?

Is there a gold vault under Neyland I don't know about?

  • Dooley's $ can be paid over 3 years, that's not a problem. Gruden or whoever the next coach is, I'm not sure about there $, but it won't be a problem if Hart thinks he has the right guy.

The money is coming from boosters like Jim Haslem and Thunder Thornton. Always been that way. The AD is basically the boosters spokesman.

The SEC is currently re-negotiating their contracts with ESPN and CBS and looking to start their own network, which according to the story on MrSEC.com could be worth $10-15 Million per school per year. That should do it.

That will certainly help down the road but not a cent of that is available now. That said, money will not be an issue.

No. It's fine. I'm just wondering how we'll raise this money. Thunder Thornton and some others will probably reach in because I'm sure they're tired of seeing a losing team. Heck, wonder if we could hit Peyton up.

The Haslams though I'm not sure about. They just bought the Browns, so it seems to me they'd be more inclined to hire Gruden for the pro team not the Vols.

That is an option that's available for him but Ive been told he prefers Knoxville over Cincinnati for family reasons. Peyton has some involvement but I don't think its financially. TIFWIW

Not sure who your referring to but the big boosters at UT are plenty free with their money all on their own. If we dont get Gruden it will not be because of money.

Your correct Gruden is not and will not be coming to Tennessee next year or any year . Gruden has expressed an interest in returning to coaching and there will be some NFL team that moves heaven and earth to get him . We need to have patience with the coach we have , did you think we would be playing for the SEC title this year ?

  • That is not correct. The big boosters definetly have a lot say but they don't run things like many people think. Haslam was onboard with firing Fulmer but a lot of other very large donors including Thunder were not. Jim Haslam was against firing Pearl and Pearl still got fired. They will do what it takes to get the coach UT needs and will have a big say but it is not like Oregon or Oklahoma State. They give the AD the room to do his job.

You are correct about the Fulmer situation Thunder was not on board but other large donors where and Thunder was I guess you could say outnumbered. The boosters have more to say than you think.

  • Neyland Stadium and the UT football program is the gold vault. We are talking about millions and millions of dollars. There is no way a 5 million dollar buyout will stop Dooley from being fired. How bout the money the program is losing with the 20,000 empty seats at home games, as well as a decrease in donations and everything else. They have to weigh opportunity cost into this. Keeping Dooley will cost alot more then the 5 million it'll take to fire him.

  • I have no idea what is true or not about our coaching situation, but with respect to the OP's question, the most reasonable theory I have heard about the economics of a coaching change goes something like this:

    1. Hart tries to get Dooley to accept a lower buyout than his contract provides for, based on allegations that Dooley breached his contract a year ago. If he does, the buyout is some number less than the approx. $5mill it is now.

    2. Whatever the buyout number for Dooley is, there are a handful of big money boosters who have offered to write checks to cover said buyout.

    3. The University will spring for the new coach/staff. Assuming it is Gruden, Hart expects that increased ticket sales from a home run hire will pay for the higher price tag for said home run. This number to be supplemented up front as needed by booster donations.

Again, I know none of this to be true, it simply seemed like the most reasonable explanation of the number crunching out of the many rumors I have read. Have some salt with this. biggrin

  • Let me throw in that money is needed for two other things....paying the debt service on alot of construction which all is not for athletics (parking garages) and reserves, If you hire a new coach you probably need to add an additional $10,000,000 a year for the increased salaries of said coach and assistants. Paying the buyouts doesn't look that bad spread over 3 or not. UTAD needs to get $30,000,000 year extra to accomplish this.

I think UT will always be Haslams number one baby. So dont think he will abandon them nor still their coach if Gruden wants to be here they will make it happen.

Im not a financial wizard but i highly doubt money will be an issue for UT. Just because it reported being in the red last year is scaring people and i think thats a bit misleading. I think they were in tbe red for last year only and that figured in the new facilities being completed. Heck the year before UT fanked in the top 5 in money i believe it was.

    Puddin Gooden

  • Or they could just jack the price of tuition up this year....oh wait....they do that anyway...

I have looked at the financials and can tell you that UTAD has issues....AD Hart has spoken about this too. The debt is still there and there are no reserves. Just adding a set amount to pay down debt and and a set amount to build up reserves (we have $2 million while bama has $100 million) and the additional annual cost of a home run coach plus assistants. $ 30 million extra give or take 5 is where we need to get to.

Tuition has zero to do with it.

  • Interesting a little bit after I asked this question I ran into a friend who was at the last game. He said he looked up at one of the boxes, saw all three Haslams and Peyton and none of them were happy.

Yeah it probably always will be Jim's number one baby. I remember him being around the student center once when I was in undergrad slapping students on the back. Guy loves UT.
