Alright - let's assume for a minute that ALL of the smoke we've been seeing was what it now appears to have been - a smokescreen. (Don't like to do I told you so's, BTW, but...
)
Because of the out of control rumors that have been swirling, some are disgruntled with Hart, even to the point of calling for his head. Now the truth is, none of us know what is REALLY happening behind the scenes. Everything we are posting is conjecture. But that, in my opinion, is to Hart's credit.
Remember the coaching searches under Hamilton? Remember hearing OVER and OVER that we had visited with this or that coach and OVER and OVER watching those coaches get raises while our coaching search continued? Mike Hamilton sure knew how to make some head coaches money.
Hart, on the other hand, has been like an AD ninja
(I KNEW I was going to find a use for that icon someday!). No one knows where he is or what he is doing. The insiders that once had rock-solid information are now grasping at straws.
Hart let us chase after the Gruden story while he has quietly gone about his business of finding a new coach.
Will that have some consequences in the short term? Yep. People will be at least a LITTLE disappointed at this point if we hired Bear Bryant. I mean... we had JON GRUDEN on the line.
But in the end, if we are able to get the guy that we need because Hart was able to conduct his business without tipping his hand? Good for him. Good for us.

He could have conducted his business in stealth mode without allowing the fans to go crazy. The two things are not really related. He could have done everything he has done in the exact same manner and still have everyone in the dark if he had come out and simply said he contacted Gruden and he wasn't interested a week ago.
It's not like the people here or at VQ haven't been reporting on Hart and other candidates even with the Gruden story going on.

Why I Am OK With Hart's Handling of Gruden
