Why not Brian Kelly?

Guys, everyone knows about the history of Notre Dame. We know about the Heismans and the National Championships. We know about Rudy. We know about the NBC contract. We know about the BCS top 8 deal. I'm not sure how "power" came into this discussion.. I thought we were trying to determine if it's easier to recruit at Tennessee or Notre Dame, so I'm not interested in the "overall" number of NFLers from both schools. I'm interested in current number of NFLers from both schools. That would indicate which school has recruited more talent in the modern era. Notre Dame has 29. Tennessee has 27. I expected the number to be more like 35-15 in favor of UT. Obviously, I was wrong and ND has had more talent come through their program in recent years than I realized but I think 29-27 indicates that neither team has an advantage today when it comes to recruiting.

If Brian Kelly is indeed an Irish American Catholic, there's pretty much no way he leaves Notre Dame. Just being devoted to the Christian faith with an emphasis on Catholicism would lock him into ND for as long as they'd have him. I don't disagree with that. I just don't think it's easier to recruit to Notre Dame. Easier to recruit Catholics? Well, yeah.. but there's a lot of kids in America who aren't.

You leave out an important characteristic in those numbers. That is probably over a 15 to 18 year span. In that span Notre Dame had losing seasons on several of them, mainly in the early 2000s where I assume their recruits still came in. Now Tennessee is in the losing seasons and we cannot buy big time recruits. When I talk big time, I'm talking about 5*s that pan out as they are billed. We have recruited 4*s that have played up to and over their potential but not enough 5*s to compete with the Alabama's of the world.

Really? Come on now...We have a strong fan base but nowhere near the national fan base that Notre Dame does. You think we could play games in Ireland, New York, DC, Dallas, and have huge fan presence?

No, not really. If I were Catholic, I'd probably cheer for Notre Dame too and there are a lot of Catholics in this country. I have no problem admitting that the post you quoted was not a well thought out response.

Overall, there have been 471 NFL players from Notre Dame compared to 329 from Tennessee. They have seven Heisman trophy winners compared to Tennessee's one. They have 13 national championships compared to Tennessee's six.

They have frigging MOVIES about their program. Ever watch Rockne or better yet Rudy? They are the only program that has their own TV station. They are one of the only programs out there still that is independent and can stay independent because they don't have to give a flying flip about joining a conference and don't have to.

You know they are the only individual school that is written into the BCS contract that if they are in the top 8 they immediately make it in?

UT does not have that much power. And I'll explain why.

They ARE the Catholic school. They have feeder programs across the country. Go to Catholic High in Knoxville or Notre Dame in Chattanooga and ask them how many of them would want to play for the Irish. Now multiply that by about 300 for every other Catholic high school across America. And for every Jim Haslam we have, guess what? They probably have 50.

By the way, Notre Dame is a private college so they don't have to release salaries. That $1.4 million is a guesstimate and I've seen several sources that actually put his salary around $3 million.

You think Dooley's $5 million buyout is bad? They've paid Charlie Weis $9 million to get rid of him.

Brian Kelly also happens to be an Irish American Catholic. That's his frigging dream job. They will compensate him very well after this season.

And while its hard to see Irish support around here if you go up North where Catholics outnumber Protestants 5 to 1 you'll see it clearly.

And, yes, while I bleed orange and always will, Notre Dame is second in my heart. Why? Because I'm Catholic.

Well 2000, hard to argue w/any of those facts...well presented argument sir and I concur.

So, as I've pointed out in a number of posts, the available coaching talent pool from which UT can draw (and I'm talking about a big time, Saban-esque type hire), is very shallow...very shallow. Ya'll have heard my ramblings before on making a lateral hire, so I won't go there again.
Hart, deep pocket donors, UT admin & VOL fans in a very tough spot on this coaching change that looks to be a foregone conclusion. Absent a Gruden hire, which I concede is highly unlikely and is by no means a guarantee of success on the field (albeit a major improvment to recruiting), who's next on the short list? As everyone scripts countless scenarios and taking into account next year's schedule, this situation is looking increasingly FUBAR!

All that being said, gotta stand behind the team and support them thru thick & thin! GBO!!

Had to use a different set of rankings for this because 247 only goes back a couple years.. the database I used only goes back to 2002.

    2002
    UT - 2
    ND - 24

    2003
    UT - 18
    ND - 12

    2004
    UT - 20
    ND - 91

    2005
    UT - 4
    ND - 40

    2006
    UT - 23
    ND - 8

    2007
    UT - 3
    ND - 8

    2008
    UT - 35
    ND - 2

    2009
    UT - 10
    ND - 21

    2010
    UT - 9
    ND - 14

    2011
    UT - 13
    ND - 10

    2012
    UT - 17
    ND - 20

    AVG
    UT - 14
    ND - 23

The year where ND finished 91st skews things. If you ignore that year, their average is 16th.. only 2 spots below our average. There isn't enough evidence to say either school has an advantage in recruiting but I can't imagine Tennessee ever finishing 91st.

Lol. Take a stroll through New York, LA, Boston, or Chicago. Count the ND apparel vs the Tennessee apparel.

EDIT: Also, with regards to the whole money thing. ND's endowment is estimated by Forbes (they are private and don't have to disclose) at ~$6 billion. Tennessee's is just over ~$1 billion.

Just curosity ND is so great hear latley and hav so much money when was the last time they won a national title and why would vols fans care what place like new york, boston, and chicago wears we area south team. Every body asking about brain kelley if nd is his dreamjob then probably not but i believe we at least should make him say no

I'm not gonna look up the recruiting numbers. That takes too much time. I've followed recruiting closely enough to know its tough at ND, mainly because of academics.

How many NFL players went to Notre Dame? How many went to UT? I'd be surprised if UT doesn't dominate

Kids who are smart and are good athletes are attracted to Notre Dame. They sell it as a 40 year decision not a 4 year decision. You get hurt in the NFL you can get a job anywhere making big money. We are not going to get the Alabama type kids nor do we need too. I don't know if you noticed but Stanford, Cal, Notre Dame and UCLA are pulling great talent each year. You cant compare UT with Notre Dame its not even comparable. Also ND still has sent more players to the NFL. Now that Brian K has this team going in the right direction we should be sending alot more. ButI agree we have sucked over the last 20 years and this is only one good year. If you can get this team to start winning 9 10 11 games year after year than I would say he is a hot coach.

Notre Dame is still paying Charlie Wiess ( Slobber Lips ) . I am sorry to say but ND can outspend Vols. Its pointless in even trying and in addition Notre Dame has found their man and Brian K has found his team. From here on out its a win win.

Based on the conference you play in, or lack thereof, I agree that you don't need Alabama type kids to win 9,10, 11 games or even make it to the national championship but you'll need elite talent to actually win it. That said, I hope ND gets an opportunity to prove otherwise in January

They seem like a great fit but if the HC position opens up at UT, I hope we take a stab at him.

I'd rather have Zombie Robert Neyland!

The only thing really good ND's had on offense since he's been there is Golden Tate, which didn't have much to do w/his scheme.

Jury's still out on him, IMO.

Golden Tate never played for BK.

  • i thought we should we went full court for kelly after Fulmer..he was really the only one i saw Tn should set their focus on getting ...i saw that he was taking the leftover recruits of OSU, Mich. St, Mich, and other major universities in his area, and STILL was winning big and going to BCS games w/ Cinci...i think he passed on us (only a guess) bec he was waiting for ND hc job to open up bec Charlie Weiss was already on the hot seat..he bid his time for one more year and got his dream job (he is Irish Catholic)...not sure we can lure him away for any amount but would absolutely love to have him..or Jon Gruden! :)

  • I hate to suggest this, because it will hurt ND. But if I were UT I would make a play for our O.C Chuck Martin. He replaced Kelly at Grand Valley State & won big there, infact they never missed a beat. He is going to make a great Head Coach at this level in the near future. That should be the guy ya'll make a play for imo.
