Serious question: Why do so many UT fans think HC experience is a must for this hire?
I don't get it.
Tennessee has had two guys in the past 50 years have great careers in Knoxville that did NOT have HC experience.
Doug Dickey won 2 SEC titles, and if he wouldn't have been so dumb to leave for his alma mater might have won many more. ZERO HC experience when he was hired.
Phil Fulmer obviously is the other.
Between them, 4 SEC titles and one NC.
-Majors had HC experience: A couple SEC titles, but he was inconsistent. -Kiffin had NFL HC experience. No comment needed -Dooley had HC experience.
I know some fans think UT doesn't need to go that route. It's an all-time power, an elite program. Etc.
I agree that it's an elite historical program. That's a no-brainer.
But so was Oklahoma when it hired Stoops. So was Georgia when it hired Richt. Florida isn't a historical power but is college football's winningest program in the past 22 years. It hired an assistant.
I guess it takes a strong AD to pull it off. A guy with a proven track record.
Personally, I think a TON of people could win in Knoxville. A TON.
Sometimes, rather than focusing on where a coach is today, I think you have to focus on where he will be tomorrow.
There are great assistants out there right now. In 10 years, some of them will be coaching giants.
Someday, people will ooh back and think, "Dear God, why didn't we hire that guy when we had a chance?"
Anyway, my two cents.
I'm curious what the thinking is on your end. I'm just offering an outsiders POV.
Take it easy guys ...

I have no problem with an outstanding coordinator becoming head coach. However, in the context of the UT situation I believe the thinking was that a successful HC has a higher likelyhood of success than a coordinator. It's an easier sell to the fans and appears to give a quicker return on the investment. The powers that be have made their decisions, so far, based on internal and external pressure, their denials notwithstanding.

I think for many, like myself, we see the SEC as a different animal from when Fulmer was here and certainly it has changed since Dickey was here. Right now, the SEC has some very good head coaches, much better than when Fulmer had his best days.
Bringing in a guy with no HC experience, at this time in SEC football to a state without a great recruiting base exacerbated by Franklin's presence and success at Vandy in building relationships in state, is a little scary
Many of us were hoping for someone who on their name and resume alone could bring a top 15 or better class this year, with their coaching skill give us atleast one you didn't have enough talent to win that game win next year, and as a result build some real momentum and make it more likely than not that UT would right back into the thick of things for the 2014 season.
You are right about assistant coaches, but for every Fulmer or Dickey, there's a Charlie Weis or Orgeron or more recently Ellis Johnson. There is no guarantee of success for whoever walks to the podium, but setting parameters for the hire, including HC experience is all about increasing your odds of getting it right. It may be now the powers that be may need to revise the parameters. I'm still not sold on Smart and this has nothing to do with Dooley. Muschamp had success as a DC independent of Saban, but Kirby has not. Anyone that hires Kirby is hoping that he channels Saban and that is a mistake.

If you look at UTs history, the two best coaches of all time did not have prior HC experience. Neither Neyland nor Fulmer had prior HC experience, yet they led the program to it most glorious heights. Majors was also successful at Tennessee, but not on the same level as those two. Clearly the last two attempts to hire coaches with HC experience failed, so maybe going the OC/DC route is what this program needs.

Why not an assistant?
