Will Butch be a better recruiter than Dooley?

  • Just curious.
    - Will we finish higher in the ranking now than we were when CDD left?
    - Next year, where do people project the class to be ranked?

Just my two cents, I think CDD was a bad coach and an above average recruiter. I think his recruiting would have continued to taper off for the same reason Von Bell is leaning towards someone else, if you can't win and are on the hot seat, you can't recruit. That said, I don't see any reason to expect Butch will bring in monster classes here. He doesn't have the name to sell recruits this year, and with the schedule next year it won't get any easier to sell UT as a winner.

Can someone talk me out of it?

  • I think UT ends with a top 20 class this year. Next year depends on how competitive they are in 2013.IF McCullers does not leave, with the offenseive and defensive lines (at least the starters) they have, I think UT will be competitive in most, if not all games. I actually think Jones' and his staff will recruit pretty well. I hope/suspect that many kids actually liked UT (facilities, gameday experience, etc.), but were constantly bombarded with "Dooley's getting fired" from other recruiters. Now, with a new coach, whom just about everyone with expertise in the college football profession says is a very good coach, hopefully, their would be some renewed interest in UT by some recruits.

  • I always thought Dooley was a good, but not great, recruiter. I think he was viewed that way by the rest of the SEC. Unfortunately, to win at Tennessee you need to be a great recruiter.

  • I think long term Butch will recruit better at UT if he produces some wins in the SEC. Dooley was an excellent recruiter, but had some poor coaching performances. Dooley has the edge for now, but Butch will eventually produce better results overall. Dooley did get Hunter and Patterson... but recruited way too many 3 star aths to hang with the SEC competition.

  • I'm not sure how anybody would know at this point. Let's see who Jones is able to get signed this year and next year. Also there's a difference between being good at evaluating talent and being a good or great recruiter. I'm not sure if Butch and his staff are good or bad at either one right now. Time will tell. Dooley was good at both in my opinion, but he didn't appear to be a good coach, as judged by wins (a few "bad" wins in there) and losses (a few really "bad" losses in there), and that hurt him the last two years in recruiting.

  • If he is worse, Tennessee is in REAL trouble.

  • I think that he has a ton of pressure on him next year. If he does not compete with the big boys or get that "signature" win, then the hill will get steeper in recruiting and with the fans. I don't believe this is fair but could be the way it is. I don't think the W-L will be much different, but hopefully we will show improvement. If he can do this, then recruiting will pick up. As other posters have pointed out, he needs to be a great recruiter. Good will get him fired in 3-4 years.

Where is the proof he is doing better? I'm not hating on the man and I will support him until, like Dooley, he proves himself one way or the other. This is the 'SPLASH' time but the nut cuttin' time is approaching.

I understand why you would say that, but for the first time in a long time I disagree with you regarding Dooley. Dooley had NFL talent at the 7 positions on offense that were held by his recruits. On D, Randolph and McNeil will be in the league, Johnson and Maggit, Sentimore, McCullers, Couch will all be in the league. I think Jordan Williams has a shot. Dooley can recruit and did it well enough to win. His recruiting isn't why UT didn't beat GA, Mizzu, FL, Vandy, or South Carolina. Five losses because of poor coaching, whether it had to do with his decision making or the horrible defensive scheming. Better coaches could have won all five of those games with the current talent.

If you call Dooley an "excellent" recruiter, what does that make Saban, Miles, Richt and Muschamp?

Beyond excellent... I think Dooley started out exceptionally well with recruiting with his first two classes. considering the fact that Tennessee isn't flooded with talent like some of the other states, his first two classes were really good. It wasn't perfect by any means, but he left Tennessee in a more desirable state than what he was left with.
