Worley's World: Vols switch QBs

Lack of "data" notwithstanding, Derek Dooley simply felt the Tennessee Vols needed another change at quarterback. So the second-year coach is tossing a freshman into the fire.

  • In this microwave society, I'm glad Dooley is building for the future. We will return, just not this year. Go Vols!

  • Not that I care but, I wonder what Phil "I'll punch you in the face" Simms thinks about this move?

  • Are we going to go back to not being able to run the ball. I am sure that Worley will be in the shotgun most of the time since he is not been behind center very often and does he know how to make checks at the line?

Valid questions ACV but only game performance will show us the truth. He was good under pressure in HS. One of the defensive guys he will face on Saturday is a guy he faced in HS. Clowney was more of a beast in HS and Worley made adjustments to his game and carved up Clowney's team. However, this is big time college football so we won't know until after Saturday's game. I am looking for a simplified game plan with a lot of quick hitters, screens and just enough down field stuff to keep SC off balance. It would be wonderful if the run game showed up big. Look for a lot more Devrin. JMO

  • I just noticed something in the picture that heads this article. Look at the position of the ball in Lane's hands. No wonder he fumbled. The ball is in very exposed position. Even though it is just after the hand-off it should already be properly tucked.

  • The right move. Get him experience. If Tyler gets hurt early next year, we have an experienced back-up. And we still have a chance to win some big games this year. Why save a redshirt when we have almost half the season left and likely will sign another top QB in the next 2 years anyway. I agree 100% with Dooley on this one. Coaches have short leashes. Until you establish yourself and buy job security, you do whatever it takes to win now.

  • “We have a lot of data to make a switch. We don’t have a lot of data on Justin.”

WOW!! That quote is very telling. Basically saying, "we know Simms is no good. Justin can't do any worse."

I was wrong. Thought Simms could do better and Worley would red shirt. Hope he's ready!

  • How huge of a move is this if you're Justin Worley? Just think of it a little bit from the kid's shoes. I couldn't ever imagine the feeling of being at a major SEC school with tremendous tradition, getting ready to start as a fresh QB, against my home state university that snubbed me during recruiting. Tremendous emotions going on in this young man's world. If Dooley has done anything, he has definitely taught the guys to grow up quick.
