Worst Tennessee team ever?

  • I think this is the worst game fundamentally, that I've seen in a while. I just hope Dooley hasn't lost this team.

I'm not blaming it on coaching or how young we are, I'm just saying IMO this is the worst Tennessee football team I have ever seen! If I'm wrong please tell me? Is this the worst Tennessee team?

You are completely wrong. Bill Battle's last team was much worse. Unfortunately we have played only the best of the SEC to date. We finally get to play the second tier the next two weeks. We'll see where we are then. I also think the 2005 team was worse. Especially when that team started the year ranked #4 in the nation and did not suffer any major injuries or have any real excuses. But this year is starting to ruin my mood!

  • I'm a huge Dooley fan! But sometimes I thi k Dooley needs to be tougher on the guys. It just reminds me of Fulmer at the end when all he would do is clap and pat them on the butt as they jogged by! I don't want a coach that gets run over by his players! I want a field general to lead!

  • I'm not knocking you, my friend. I am saying you merely lack historical perspective. You haven't seen a worse Tennessee team, but you haven't seen that many!

Be patient. We are getting there. Next year we will be competive, and the next year afer that, we could be very special.

These kids would have loved, the '70s, eh ODA?

Boys, this team has POTENTIAL. Our bad teams in the mid '70s, '88 and so forth, had seniors all over the field and still sucked. We are playing freshmen and sophs. Be patient, not negative.

Boys it was really nasty at times in the late 50's and early 60's. Much worse than now because we would not change our offense and the great players for the most part would not come to UT. I've seen us score the first three points against Bama and then lose 53-3. I watched a 100 yard kickoff return by N. Texas beat us at the end of the game. I'm an old fart so believe me you youngsters when I tell you I've seen it much worse with no hope in sight. I was at the game for Johnny Majors first game as UT coach and heard the Pride of the Southland Band play 'When Johnny Comes Marching Home" and thinking our troubles were over. We all had chills running down our spines and still we waited five years for a decent team. In 2012 we will be much better and in 2013 we will be in the thick of the SEC East race. Hang in there. 'Cheesy' watched his Auburn Tiggers get waxed by UGA 45-7 and with lot's more talent and experience than we have.

Before Dickey, Tennessee would beg for fans to come to the game and watch the Vols lose.

    Great post, tnbear.

It's before my time, but I would remind our younger fans how young Steve Spurrier, who played at Johnson City Science Hill, surely would have bee a Vol, but Bowden Wyatt refused to leave the single wing offense behind and throw it from a T-formation, as Steve wanted.
Spurrier went on to win a Neisman at Florida and has been a thorn in our side ever since.

Can you imagine what our overall record would have been if we had switched in the late 50's and 'the ole ball coach' came to UT. He was a special player. I played with Bob Johnson, Steve Sloan, Donnie Buckner and others on a Tennessee HS team that was so loaded that every starting player on offense got what would today would be the equivalent of a D1 scholarship and only Johnson chose to go to UT. It was that bad back then. I've watched a lot of coaches over the years and I never been more encouraged about our direction than I am now. GO VOLS!vols

I remember Bob Johnson well. One of the best to ever play center at Tennessee.

Played a bunch of years for the Bengals. I think they retired his jersey.

I was working in Japan( USAF) trying to get the play by play 1968 Orange Bowl when we lost to Oklahoma. They had a nose tackle that gave Johnson fits. That was very painful too.

Granville Ligons. Beat Johnson out for the top lineman of any kind that year. Broke his leg in the game and was never the same. Good memory there jft.biggrin

What I remember is the Vols' spirited comeback and Karl Kremser missing the chip shot field goal that would have won the game for Tennessee. Broke a young boy's heart.

And you know, it makes me sick that we accept that Linkhaus, or whatever it was, national championship for that season, and post it on the side of Neyland. Totally bogus. if we had won that game, yes. But we lost.

Alabama lists all its bogus championships, but I used to think we were better than that.
