Would you be happy with this staff? Updated to include Thigpen

  • You don't have to be a name to recruit. Here is Meyer's first staff:

Urban Meyer - Head Coach - first year at UF
Steve Addazio - Tackles/Tight Ends - first year
Stan Drayton - Running Backs - first year
Billy Gonzales - Wide Receivers - first year
Chuck Heater - Recruiting Coordinator/Cornerbacks - first year
    John Hevesy - Centers/Guards - 0 years
John "Doc" Holliday - Associate Head Coach/Safeties - first year
    Greg Mattison - Co-Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Line - first year
Dan Mullen - Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks - first year
Charlie Strong - Assistant Head Coach/Co-Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers - sixth year

Retained one guy on staff(Charlie Strong). Aside from Charlie Strong and Drayton none of them had SEC experience. None of them even had experience recruiting Florida unless you want to count Doc Holliday at NC State. He brought two guys with him from Utah including his offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator.

That staff will get hammered on the recruiting trail in the SEC.

I believe you are mistaken. This staff wouldrecruit well.

    HC - Jones
    OC/QB - Mike Bajakian
    OL - Don Mahoney
    RB - Jay Graham
WR - T.J. Weist or Tee Martin - Weist has told people he is coming already
TE - Mark Elder - Jones' TE/Special teams coordinator at Cincy

    DC - John Jancek
    DL - Steve Stripling
    DB - Willie Martinez

1 other defense coach to be hired

One possible addition would be Elder to safeties (i believe they moved him there at UC in 2012)/special teams and Weist to TE. Or you could make Tee QB coach and have Bajakian not coach a position.

they were recruiting in Florida the land of milk and honey. You can hope our staff does ok recruiting but the only thing you can expect is for them to struggle and that isn't what we need.'

Heck even Derek Dooley was smart enough to know he couldn't bring but 1 coach with him from the lower level job

I thought Addazzio got the BC head coaching job

Look at UCs roster this year - 21 players were from Florida. You don't pull that many players from Florida without establishing some good connections in the state. If Jones takes those preexisting connections and puts Tennessee's name on the table, he's going to start drawing the interest of the higher ranked players. Those high 3 and 4-star players who wouldn't even look at Cincinnati will look at Tennessee, and if he sells the university to them the way he sold it in the press conference you will see the pipeline open up down there.

This is not a guarantee of success by any means, but I do think that there won't be as much of a struggle as some people are claiming.

  • I'm more interested in how he may reopen the pipeline to Ohio and Pennsylvania. That would be a nice change.

You can tell yourself that all you want, but there is no "history" that says you are correct. These guys have recruited well in the past and have
long term contacts in the places we need them to.

Since it's close to Christmas, I have you a +1. After setting the record for down votes in a 48 hour period (at least I'm guessing I did), I still love my Vols & agree with the few non Kool Aid drinkers who see this guy will not last. As long as he's here, we will forever be a 8-4 team. Let's see how much longer it takes or me to drop from a 90 rating to a 0

I hear Thigpen is a great recruiter so thats a plus. But what do yall think about Coach Jones continuing his trend of engaging the alumni and calling Al Wilson for the LB Coach job. Big Al was as good as any LB who has played in SEC and NFL in last 25 years and I have a feeling would be a great recruiter. Yalls thoughts?

Wilson doesn't have a college degree, so he can't be a coach on the NCAA level...
