Wow.... ESPN coaching hire rankings

  • I would post the article but it's an insider article and most people probably couldn't view it.

    Travis Haney ranked Butch-to-UT as the 9th best hire of the year. Obviously it's all subjective but I really felt like someone slapped me in the face. I've never been a fan of his for various reasons (writing subjective articles is one of them) but I may despise him now. He's got Butch behind Taggart-to-USF and others.

    Am I wrong for thinking that he is way, way off on this? I really think in 3 years we're going to be able to look back and say that Jones was a top 3 hire from this year. Here's his list. I won't list his explanations.

    1. Bielema-to-Arky
    2. Stoops-to-UK (REALLY?!!! A freakin' coordinator to a worse program?!!!)
    3. Petrino-to-WKU (Whatever man....)
    4. Malzahn-to-Auby
    5. Taggart-to-USF
    6. Kingsbury-to-TTech (another coordinator.... wow)
    7. Andersen-to-Wisco (just don't see it)
    8. Tuberville-to-Cincy
    9. Jones-to-UT
    10. Doeren-to-NCState

    I think Haney is on something...... I really do.

    To me I think not in any order but top 5 would be Doeren to NC State, Tubbs to Cincy, Petrino to WKU (but won't stay for long), Jones to UT and Kent State coach to wherever he went. I think Doeren and Kent State coach (Hazell?) or something close to that are going to be great coaches.

  • Those things are so subjective and it all depends on what your criteria is for ranking. Is the objective to rank the best coaches? The best fits? The best considering the school's prestige? The best for recruiting? Too many factors there that you can't really take those seriously. I saw another list that ranked the SEC hires as Aub, UT, Ark, UK. Everyone will have their opinions and you can make a lot of good arguments for the hires he ranked above UT.

    The only one that made me do a double take Stoops to UK. Really? Second best hire in the country? Not sure how anyone can make a logical case for that. Other than him, I read the list and just said "eh, whatever".

    True, but I look at the coach for the hire not the coaching hire. A great coach will make a mediocre hire look phenomenal in a couple years. A mediocre coach will make a great hire look terrible in a couple years.

  • Ranking the new coaches now is just about as useful as college football's preseason rankings.

  • He's also a Tennessee guy, so he may be purposely trying to not look like a homer. Who knows, and honestly like people have said before, who cares?

    It's funny, but just a week ago I was watching ESPN. The subject came up of NCAAF coaching hires, CBJ was ranked best hire! Not sure which analysts they were at the moment, but both agreed 100%. So I never take to heart anything said on ESPN .

  • In terms of buzz around the hire it looks about right to me. I don't think anyone in the SEC is looking over their shoulder because we hired Butch Jones.

  • I think its incredibly accurate. We made a terrible hire. Jones was at best the 4th option. All these other hires were top choices. As far as coaches Jones would be much higher on the list, but in regards to a hire he was mediocre on a good day.

    I don't really see how you can say that. The only other person who was ever a possibility was Charlie Strong. Gruden, Stoops, Fisher, and Gundy sure as heck weren't coming. As ADDH said, he only had 2 MOU's out, one to strong and one to Jones.

  • The problem is theses list just vary in how you rank them. It just depends on if you see it as best coach, best hire, etc. The only one that I couldn't figure out was how could anyone think that Kentucky hire is the number 2 hire. Otherwise that's how somebody feels and that's fine. Hopefully this just means he will be on the list of people who have to admit they were wrong about Butch Jones going to Tennessee.

    We may care when WKU comes to Neyland in September! I'm not saying they'll pull of the upset, but his offense against a D lacking speed and in transition could spell trouble.

  • Here's another writer's perspective on the coaching hires. He grades them rather than ranking them.

    UT got a B+ which I think is about right. Not the splash that we were all hyped up about and hoping for, but a solid hire that could work out really well. He gives us all a humbling reality check regarding our expectations before the hire.

    And just to show how different opinions can be on this:

    UK: Haney, 2nd; Forde, "incomplete"
    Cal: Haney, 15th (last); Forde, "A"

    Clearly a very subjective topic.
