Let’s take inventory on Tennessee’s Class of 2012 after one season. And let’s start with a look at receiver Cody Blanc.

  • Last year when you heard Blanc was running by DB's we were all shocked. But then the season happened and we understood why... I hope they put him on defense, need more speed back there.

  • I hope he can continue to improve. He has got good speed that maybe we can utilize.

Depending on who we sign a WR, I tend to agree. Could make an outstanding safety and I know we don't see it much these days but maybe the coaches could practice him at both WR and S so that if Randolph or McNeil go down, we'll have more options. Not a suggestion. Just a thought.

  • I say we slap 10-12 lbs. on him and turn him into a RB. Doesn't he run a legit 4.4 or better?

    4.41 per Rivals, FWIW.

And he's 6'3".. we have a great need at WR. If he can catch and run routes, I say leave him where he is. He could end up being our #1 WR if those measureables are accurate.

We've got plenty of talent at WR and we are probably about to get more. When I think of Blanc at RB, I'm picturing Jalen Hurd. He's being recruited by everyone to play RB and he's 6'3", so why couldn't Blanc be our Jalen Hurd? You can probably bank on Hurd not coming to UT. He's being hyped to be a top 5 overall recruit next year. I doubt we land him just based off of recent history.

We do not have plenty of talent at WR.. Blanc is one of only three underclassman WRs and one of only four on our returning roster who we have any reason to think is good enough to play WR in the SEC.

We have Pig (who is 5'8"), Bowles (who was behind Blanc on the depth chart), Croom (who was moved to TE), and Jacob Carter.

We need 6 to 8 reliable WRs going into next season and 3 or 4 reliable RBs.. We already have 3 reliable RBs and 4 if you include Pig. We only have 4 reliable WRs, it would be crazy to move Blanc from a position of need to a positon where we have proven playmakers returning

  • I see what u did there

I agree. I wanted him at safety from the get go.

Look I get what you're saying but hear me out.

Next year we've got Pig (So), Bowles (RSF), Vincent Dallas (Jr, whom you forgot about), and Jacob Carter (Sr) coming back. We've got Camion Patrick (I know he probably doesn't qualify) and Josh Smith committed right now.

It sounds like if this weekends visit with Paul Harris goes well, he'll be enrolled in January. We are right in the thick of things with North and Massington with outside shots at James Quick and maybe Laquon Treadwell. Those are just the WR that we know of for now.

If we land just one of North or Massington, which seems likely at this point, we have 7 maybe 8 receivers (8 if we could land North AND Massington) for next year (5 fr (Patrick?), 1 so, 1 jr and 1 sr) without Blanc.

That is an incredibly young group with a proven (intelligent, great route runners) sophomore, junior and senior and 2-3 freshman that could easily contribute next year (Bowles, Harris, North/Massington). And another thing to consider is that ALL of our receivers will essentially be "freshman" with regards to knowledge of Butch Jones' system.

I wouldn't dismiss my idea as easily as you clearly have. I just don't think my idea for Blanc is as crazy as you tried to make it sound. As I said earlier, I believe we are just fine next year with or without Blanc at WR and based off of measurables, Blanc is just as good all around if not faster than Jalen Hurd. I say give Blanc a shot and see if he can handle the beating that all RB's take.

I don't think it's a crazy idea if we sign the guys you've mentioned. I'm just concerned about our WR depth at this point, but that could change on NSD. Thanks for laying it out for me, I feel better about the possible #s.

What's getting lost in all this is the fact that signing Hurd is a long shot. Best recruit to come out of Tennessee maybe ever and we aren't even in the conversation with him at this point.. It blows my mind.

'maybe ever'? Kids great but Reggie White, Bob Johnson, Steve Sloan, Steve Spurrier...and many others. If you want to say the best 'maybe ever' at a specific position that might be closer to the truth but at all positions. nono

  • Cody Blanc is just a straight up football player---it's always great to have a guy like that on your roster because he can contribute in many ways. I still think receiver would be the best place for him to settle as far as a position.

    Bigorange2bone

  • Personally I'd like to see what he can do at the safety position. With Byron Moore definitely not living up to his potential that only leaves two players that I recall that are trustworthy at the safety position and one will be returning from major knee surgery. Brian Randolph and LaDarrell McNeil are great safeties but I am definitely thinking TN needs another one and too me I thought Blanc projected as a safety and think he would be great there.

    UT Doc Rok

  • Good for Cody! I hope he continues to get chances!!!!

To say he ran by our linebackers isn't that big of a deal... EVERYONE ran by our linebackers!

Maybe he is. Maybe he's not. We'll see.
