getting hyped for basketball season.

  • So I thought it would be nice to take a break from all the football speculation going on and talk about basketball, which is coming up soon. I love, love, love Tennessee basketball. I didn't really start following it until Pearl's last season, but it really got its hooks in me once I did. Like a lot of people, I was concerned by the Cuonzo hire at first, but it's obvious he's taking the program in the right direction.

The video I linked is from the Vanderbilt game to close out the regular season this year. It was a game where winning would vault us to a tie for second place while a loss would push us to around sixth. I managed to get great tickets for cheap while it looked like the year was sunk near the beginning. Even though it wasn't the first UT BB game I've been to, it was by far the best one. I really feel like the experience of going to a college basketball game is supremely underrated. The place gets LOUD. Like, louder than Neyland at times it felt like. I mean, consider this: Bruce Pearl won 96 percent of the games he played at Thompson-Boling Arena. Imagine if a coach could do that at Neyland (or almost anywhere else, for that matter). The atmosphere really is second to one.

I'm not knocking Tennessee football when I say I really think Tennessee should be a basketball school. Top-five attendance in the nation, great arena, and fertile nearby recruiting ground. There's no reason why we can't compete with programs like Kentucky, Duke, or North Carolina. Those schools have tradition, sure, but at the end of the day, what matters are the wins and the banners. And if Cuonzo keeps us on the right track, I think we'll start seeing alot more of those, sooner rather than later. vols

  • CCM doing a great job but it will take a few years to compete with the Duke, North Carolina, and Kentucky. But he is off to a good start the recruiting wars are where he is doing better than most individuals thought he would. Already has Hubbs and now maybe NIchols on board as well just need to keep it rolling. Take CJC at Kentucky 3 of top 5 players in high school has already committed to him and a fourth has KY as one of his top 2 ridiculous.

yeah I'm not saying it's a couple-years kind of situation, but I do think it can totally happen eventually. Look at schools like Boise - came out of seemingly nowhere, and now when's the last time they didn't have a 10-win season? But unlike Boise, we're Tennessee. We have the funds and the fanbase that they'll never quite have.

  • That's a good point but Tennessee is a football first school and basketball second. I understand filling Thompson Boling arena but that is just around 25,000 or less. You fill Neyland up and it is a 110,000 or less big difference, football always will be the big kahuna at UT but the basketball is coming on strong. Now you could even say the Men are actually on even playing ground with the women after all those years CPS dominated between the two

  • No one is going to out recruit UK right now with that sleaze of a coach they have. I'm not worried about Tennessee ever being the traditional power UK, UNC, and Duke is. I just want to see NCAA tourney appearances while competing for the SEC conference title year in and year out. I think Coach Martin is going to build that foundation to get UT back to the dance this year. Sweet 16 here we come...

  • I can tell you one thing, Moms and Dads that send their kids to play for Coach Zo will never regret it. That man is making men out there. I bet those guys would walk in front of a bus for that man. Not because he's their coach but, because they know he'd do the same for them.

Family, God, and Basketball. What more can you ask for out of a player or a coach.
