govols247 Staff Picks: Week 3

Staff writers Wes Rucker and Ryan Callahan predict the week's top college football games, including Tennessee's highly anticipated SEC opener against rival Florida.

    govols247 Staff

  • Wes, love ya but hope the Vols add to your sub .500 performance. Ryan, I pray you are right and this team doesn't allow past performances or trends to affect them mentally. GBO!

    madkels

  • Wes, I know you are being completely objective and professional and I have mad respect for you for that....... But, that hurt my heart.

  • Rich Rod is at Arizona not Arizona St. Not yelling. Just helping

  • Thanks for the great job fellas but I disagree with you both. I just dont think Tennessee can win a close, down the wire game on this big of a stage YET. Maybe some time in the future. So my prediction is U.T 27 U.F 16. And again I wanna say 34. An interception or fumble late by the gators and we score. GO VOLS GO!!!!!!

  • Todd Graham is at ASU.

  • Nice UT Doolio! I tend to agree with ya. Go Vols!

Afterthought: Did I read it wrong or are both Wes and Ryan picking Kansas to beat TCU. Interesting. If KS actually upsets TCU all 10 fans in the seats will make the long journey across the track that surrounds the high school-like Jayhawk field to rock the goal post before simply giving up. I hope ya'll are right but I just don't see it happening.

  • Isn't Rich Rod at Arizona not ASU?

  • If wes was on college gameday we'd have to boo him for that pick

  • Ryan Callahan's most sage statement EVER, particularly the second sentence:

"They seemed loose, excited about the opportunity to be in the national spotlight for, really, the first time since they’ve been at Tennessee. Florida may be in UT fans’ heads, but I don’t think that applies to this team or this coaching staff."

Vols make their own statement on Saturday.

  • Tennesse and Florida are very evenly matched. They have a bunch of 5* players and we have one, officially, but in the SEC on any given Saturday, it's not the team with the most talent that wins but the team that utilizes the talent they have, best. I sense a greater sense of team in this group of Vols than I have felt in years. If this is a close game, as the stats indicate, and the margin is 3 points or less, advantage Florida. If this game is one where big plays occur, on offense or defense, it could become a blowout; advantage Tennessee. IMHO, it will be the latter, advantage Tennessee 35 - Florida 17. The new eight hundred pound gorilla in the roon that no one noticed was there just belched.

  • I gotta go change some picks..Wes agrees with me on too many! Sure fire kiss of death.

How can Auburn be a 16 point favorite when they haven't scored 16 points in a game yet?

Its not a stupid question until you ask it.

I Agree.. The Dome curse was blown away gotta believe that the Florida streak is gonna be blasted this weekend..gotta also hope that maybe Wes is trying to keep the reverse mojo with his picks going.picking us to lose hoping that means we win. his winners are usually the losers lol.

  • So are you guys playing good cop bad cop?

I think if we just look at these two teams and not the last 7 years its hard not to pick the Vols. I love hearing that the players are loose and confident. Ryan is right, the record may be in the fans (and Wes') head but for many of the players this is their first or second time playing them and they believe they are the difference and this is the team to stop the streak.

Tennessee clearly has the play makers so I cant see FL having more big plays. I'm in the camp that thinks we would have won last year had Hunter not gone down. We've only seen a small sampling of what CP can do. There's no way they can cover Hunter and CP, they couldn't cover Rogers last year and he was our only real weapon. Don't forget about Z Rogers and Rivera either. All they have to do is run just enough to keep the gator D honest, expect Bray & Co to be able to put up points.

The D will get pressure on Driskel. I expect him to be the QB making the mistakes. I expect our D to create turnovers and if we get a lead I dont think they will be able to come back like last week. TAM wore down late in that game. Although we had those same problems in the past I think that is behind. The FL receivers are very average. An inexperienced QB, an average receiver core, and a RB with a sore groin! I just dont see them outscoring our offense.

Tennessee ends the streak and cruises to a BIG win!! Go Vols!!!! twocents

    UT - 31
    UF - 17

waveWelcome to the CheckerBoard UTD. Glad you spoke up. I agree that the slightly bearded one's record will suffer with that lame pick. +1 GO VOLS!

BUTCH IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. GO VOLS!

  • I'm very suprised at Wes's prediction. This is NOT the past this is today. And for those who like to live in the past, this is also not the same Florida team we've seen. They have a dork quarterback, play aganst a weak A@M and took 8 sacks, cant throw the ball down the field, and on and on and on. We didnt have patterson last year, and we didnt have hunter either, and Bray's much more poised and mature on the field with t least 8-10 people who catch the ball anywhere on the field, and we're at home baby! Why is it so hard to believe that we're better than Florida?? I don't get it.

    vol4ever

  • Really can't blame wes for picking florida but I still disagree with him I believe tennessee rises to the occasion and knocks off the gators by at least double digits

    23govols

  • Maybe because Wes has followed this series and he knows that there is something about Gainsville, but they always get up for U.T. We have seen this same scenario a dozen times. They look beatable the first two games, and come out and unleash something against us.

    bigorangeglory

  • I am so nervous about this game for the same reasons Wes cites. Hard to get the past out of your head. I just hope the players aren't fazed by it (knowing Bray, he probably won't be).

I'm also nervous because I know that after this game we will either be screaming that the sky is falling or we will be screaming with joy over releasing years of frustration. There will be no in between. If we lose, I can't think of any situation where we walk away from this thinking, "it's ok, at least we looked good out there" like we might if we were to play Bama close. This is a winnable game, but a very dangerous game. But oh man, if we win, all bets are off. This will be the happiest day in UT football in a long long time.
