I was thinking that McNiel would need to add a few lbs before really making a charge for the starting role, because 195 seems small for a safety. Then I went back and saw that Eric Berry was 5'11" and 194. So I guess he's not too small. Not comparing him to Berry in anything other than seer size.
I think whoever emerges as #1 will have earned it because Moore and Brewer both have decent amounts of playing time and Wilks is a senior. I see one of those three starting game one, but people will have an eye on McNeil as the wildcard.

Also just want to throw out a shot at the other four position battles. IMO..
4. Defensive end (I guess that is specific enough)
3. Jack LB
2. Cornerback
1. Running Backs
We'll see at the end of the week how close I am.

I mostly agree with you on that list, except I'd replace Jack LB with DT (or nose tackle, whatever we're calling it in this scheme). The new scheme is heavily dependent on that position so we need someone to step up. Running back is #1 by a mile, IMO.

Good call on the kicker...I don't know what parallel universe I warped to in order to forget about that one!!! I will shift off D End and slide 3 to 4, 2 to 3, and insert kicker at 2.

Not good one's IMO. I am scared to death of our SS position. Easily in the bottom third of the SEC. None of these guys have proved they can cover anybody in space.

It's the one position where I'm hoping a true freshman comes in a makes some noise. Well, that and Bonner @ CB.

I don't think we are horrible at this spot. Moore came in highly respected but out of shape, developed over the year, and all accounts point to him having a good spring. Brewer and Wilks have game time reps so at least we have experience. McNeil is a nice wildcard to have that rounds the unit out.
This isn't a unit that I expect to dominate the other side of the ball, but they should hold their own.

I guess in my mind the DT is likely to be McCullers, but also highly rotated. It's almost like co-starters in my mind. Also, from what I've read on here, I think Bullard isn't really an option at center anymore and Stone has all but locked that up unless Crowder comes up big in fall camp, but it's hard to replace Stone there since he does have the "OLP" experience and it seems like that's what the players want too.

I'm in your camp Rev, I think McCullers is expected to be the man at DT from Day one, the question will be how successfully we can keep him subbed during an entire football game.

It could be next year if UT somehow gets Miles, Bell, and JRM. That would be an absolute sick class of safeties battling it out with McNeil and Randolph next year.

We have the talent back there, it's just a matter of who stands out the most. I would love to see Brewer back because it's nice to have someone that can hit like he can to intimidate the opposing WR.
My guess at the next 4 are:

You guys may be right about the DT spot. That'll probably be heavily rotated. I put it on because of the new guys we have coming in that could be in one of those spots. I also wanted to put in the center battle, but thought that kicker would be more of a battle from what I've heard about how good Stone has been lately.

I don't understand the worry about the talent level at safety. The guys we have aren't very experienced, but it wouldn't this year anyway because the way the safety spots are played are very different than what they were the past few years. What you need is some talented guys, which we have, back there to make plays. If Brewer can get his cover skills down he will be perfect for us. He's a great hard tackler, but he definitely has to get quicker.
