how much of a chance is there that Chaney is retained

  • I'd love to see him still call plays if the new coach gives him a chance. He's a good old country boy and I think he enjoys Knoxville and would consider staying. If the new coach is a defensive minded guy I say AT LEAST consider letting him stay. Continuity would help! Defense unfortunately will have to be revamped entirely though thanks to Sal.

  • I would say pretty close to zero. The situation with Kiffin was different and we hired a guy who basically had no coaches he could bring with him. So keeping chaney was an option.

    Dooley was fired and I think the new guy mostly cleans house. Grahm would be the only one I think has a shot to stay.

  • If we are really down to Gruden or Fisher, I'd say there's about a 0% chance that Chaney is retained. I think he is a good OC, but Gruden and Fisher are both offensive guys and would want to install their own system and Chaney wouldn't be able to help them do that very effectively.

    If we end up with Strong or Golden, I'd put the odds in favor of Chaney being retained.

    Kiffin did and always has called his own plays. Chaney helped with the game plan, but he did not call the plays.

    Why did Kiffin hire Chaney? He didn't bring him in to call plays or to install Chaney's offense from Purdue.. He didn't bring him in because they had coached together previously.. Makes you wonder why Kiffin even hired the guy. Maybe Kiffin thought Chaney just had a great offensive mind and would be an asset in gameplanning each week?

    completely agree. I like Chaney. I think he's a sharp guy and fairly creative play caller. But i also think there is little chance that he gets retained, unfortunately. I presume the new guy would like to hire his own coordinators, especially if it's a high profile hire like Gruden, Stoops or Fisher...Now, maybe if it's someone like Fedora..he has more of a shot, but i guess it really depends on how adaptable Chaney is to whatever offensive system the new coach wants. If Chaney can work for characters as different as Dooley and Kiffen, my guess is that he is pretty adaptable and can get along with most anyone...Maybe all he needs is just an interview to convince the new coach..

  • I'm all about the new coach having freedom to bring in his guys. I just hope they consider keeping a good thing going. You could do much worse with an offense that is already used to this type of system and wouldn't have to deal with an offense install.
    I think if I'm a defensive minded guy, I say it's going to take my full attention to fix this nightmare on the D. I need somebody to handle everything offense so I can focus on fixing this mess.

  • While I think Chaney is a great guy, decent coach, and has enjoyed his time in Knoxville...I think there is a very low chance he gets retained, maybe 10-20%. I think the most favorable condition for him to be retained is, like someone said, the new guy is a defensive guy and don't have a guy that comes with them or they have worked with extensively in the past.

    That's what I was thinking it depends on the coach. Just for example say morris was our DC why not keep a young up and coming, good recruiting coach like Ansley

    That's what I would do. I'd also drop Hinshaw or move him to QBs and hire Tee Martin to coach WRs, assuming Gruden or Fisher is hired.

    I like Ansley and Conklin personally. Not that i know them, just watching them during interviews. But i cant wrap my head around keeping anyone from this defensive staff, especially the coaches responsible for our secondary. I have no coaching experience, i have no playing experience, but my lay observations of the secondary play this year are that the unit made way too many mistakes for me to attribute it to lack of skill on the players part. jmho.

    Why hire Tee martin and demote or get rid of Hinshaw? I am not aware that Tee is that good of a position coach and can't think of any big name recruits (that other SEC programs wanted) that he ever got to come to Kentucky? Hinshaw is pretty good at both. Not flaming -- just asking.

    Pretty sure there's a guy in Green Bay wearing the number 18 jersey that would disagree that he isn't a good position coach. Plus bringing Tee back home would give recruits the mindset that were going back to the "golden days" and Tee could tell them about what it was like in 98. Just a thought.

    He is considered to be as good as Hinshaw and he's a former Vol

    Tee also got Jalen Ramsey to USC and the Hatcher kid from Kentucky.

    So -- one guy who can run makes him a good position coach (don't get me wrong - big fan of 18)? Again, not aware of big time recruit (that everyone wanted) that he brought to UK. Also - most of the kids UT is recruiting now never saw (or were old enough to comprehend) UT's glory days. I don't see the sense in booting a guy who has proven to be a pretty good coach and a very good recruiter for nostalgia.
