North commits to Tennessee

After visiting Tennessee and North Carolina on consecutive weekends earlier this month, MarQuez North planned to announce his college choice on National Signing Day.

Top247 wide receiver MarQuez North of Charlotte, N.C., announced Wednesday night that he has committed to Tennessee.

He decided Wednesday there was no need to wait any longer.

The Top247 wide receiver from Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, N.C., announced Wednesday night that he has committed to Tennessee following an in-home visit with Vols running backs coach Jay Graham and wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni.

North, a four-star prospect who's ranked the No. 90 overall prospect and No. 11 wide receiver in the 247Composite for the 2013 class, chose Tennessee over North Carolina, giving new Vols coach Butch Jones his highest-profile commitment to date and immediately becoming the star of UT's 2013 class.

The 6-foot-4, 212-pound North confirmed the news Wednesday night with a post on his Twitter account after he canceled his scheduled in-home visit Thursday with North Carolina coach Larry Fedora.

"I will be going to (Tennessee) in the fall," North wrote.

The Vols and Tar Heels had emerged as the clear front-runners for North in recent weeks. Florida was the only other team that hosted him on an official visit, and Clemson had remained in contention until he called off his scheduled official visit to Clemson the weekend of Jan. 11 and instead decided to take an unofficial visit to Tennessee.

He took an official visit to North Carolina the following weekend, but the Tar Heels weren't able to overtake the Vols, who also hosted him for two of their home games this past season and one of their camps in June.

North gave Tennessee its 18th known commitment for the 2013 class and its fourth from a wide receiver, joining fellow Top247 prospect Ryan Jenkins of Marietta, Ga., and three-star prospects Josh Smith of Knoxville, Tenn., and Paul Harris of Upper Marlboro, Md.
